Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perry Funeral Home - Newark on Jul. 25, 2024.
James Edward Bennett II, known affectionately as Jamie to his friends and family, passed away from cardiac arrest on July 23, 2024, at the age of 46. Born on June 1, 1978, in
Newark, NJ, Jamie was a lifelong resident of his beloved city where he also drew his last breath, surrounded by the love of his family.
Jamie was a pillar of the community, renowned for his gentle demeanor, intelligence, and analytical mind. He dedicated over 30 years of his life to serving the City of Newark as a Business Administrator, a role in which he excelled and through which he touched many lives. His commitment to his work was paralleled only by his devotion to his family and his passion for knowledge.
A proud alumnus of Science Park Magnet High School, Jamie's thirst for learning led him to Hampton University in Hampton, VA, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. He furthered his education at Rutgers University in
Newark, NJ, where he completed his Master of Business Administration. These institutions laid the groundwork for a career marked by professionalism, integrity, and a tireless work ethic.
Jamie's personal life was a tapestry woven with love and joy. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Rosa Torres-Bennett, and a loving father to their children, Imeena Torres, Kamil Torres, Brielle Bennett, and Avery Bennett. His role as a grandfather to Amaiya Jones was one he cherished with all his heart. Jamie was a beloved son to his mother, JoAnn W. Bennett, and he followed in the footsteps of his late father, James E. Bennett. His sister, Lori-Ann Lucas, along with his mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and his nieces and nephews, will remember Jamie as the family's steady foundation. A host of uncles, aunts, family members, and dear friends also survive him, each carrying a piece of Jamie's legacy in their hearts.
Beyond his professional and family life, Jamie had a passion for reading and cooking, both activities that allowed him to explore new worlds and savor life's flavors. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life and often shared this joy with others. His love for spending quality time with his wife and children was evident to all who knew him, as were the moments of wisdom he imparted during these precious encounters.
In the words of Albert Einstein, "The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive." Jamie embodied this sentiment, giving generously of himself to his family, his work, and his community. His legacy is not just in the roles he held, but in the lives he enriched through his presence.
Jamie's life was a testament to the power of kindness, intelligence, and a well-lived life. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that his impact will be felt for generations to come. Jamie's story is not one of sorrow, but one of celebration-a celebration of a life filled with purpose, love, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
We will remember Jamie for the strength of his character, the depth of his love, and the brilliance of his mind. His spirit will continue to guide us, just as the stars guide the voyager across the seas. Jamie's journey on this earth has ended, but his story-etched in the memories of those who loved him-will never fade.
As we cherish his memory, let us honor Jamie's life by living our own with the same passion, dedication, and love that he demonstrated every day. In the quiet moments of reflection, we will find Jamie there, smiling, encouraging, and forever a part of the fabric of our lives.
