James Richard Burnett, 71, city of Bangs, passed away on August 17, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.
James, "Jim" was a devoted husband, father, teacher, and friend whose life was defined by generosity, hard work, and an unwavering love for people. He was born in Chelsea Naval Hospital, MA on May 3rd, 1954. In 1986, he moved to Bangs to plant deep roots for his own family, and it has held his heart ever since.
He had a dedicated career in education, serving as a welding instructor at Texas Youth Commission and Odessa College, shaping not only metal, but also the lives of young men. He believed education had the power to change lives. He championed his students' giftings, always encouraged them to pursue excellence, and equipped them with skills to serve them beyond the classroom. Without a doubt, he believed in his students and he showed it well.
His faith and his family were the center pieces of his life. As a loyal member of First Baptist Church of Bangs, Jim found fellowship, purpose, and a community. There, he embraced others with an open heart and he extended warmth and laughter to any and all. His greatest pride and joy by far was his family. A loving husband, devoted father to five children, and generous "Pajee" to thirteen grandchildren, he gave his whole life to loving and supporting them, no matter the cost. His family was his anchor, and he worked tirelessly to ensure their roots were strong and deep.
Jim loved bringing people together. He was happiest when hosting friends and family, sharing laughter over a good meal or a board game. Known for his legendary brisket and love for barbecuing, he often opened his home to others, creating not only meals, but also memories that will be cherished for years to come.
Christmas was an especially magical time for him. He delighted in being an elaborate gift-giver, putting thought and creativity into every present to make his loved ones feel special. After retiring, he embraced one of his favorite roles-bringing joy to the community appearing as Santa Claus for various events and parties. For many years, he wore the red suit with pride. Through this he brought laughter and magic to countless families during the holidays. It was never about the costume; it was about the love and warmth he poured into every interaction.
Jim had a tender heart and generous spirit. He was the kind of man who would give anything he had to someone in need. He quietly provided meals for the homeless, opened his home to those who had nowhere else to go, and gave second chances without hesitation. His life was a living example of compassion in action.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and encouragement that will continue to inspire everyone who knew him.
Jim is preceded in death by his son, Charles "Chuck" Burnett and is survived by his beloved wife Nancy, of 50 years, his four children- Mike and fiancé Liz, Brianne and husband Jeff, Kimbra and husband Zach, and Randa and husband James, thirteen grandchildren- Harrison and Heidi; Carlyn, Jayden, Joseph, and Adalyn; Isla Hope and Glory Grace; Jaxson, Jameson, Seth, Titus, and Anna Cate.
Memorial donations may be made honoring Jim's life.
