James "Jim" Douglas Carlson, aged 78, of North Branch, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, in the home he built and shared with his beloved wife of 41 years, Barbara "Barbie" Carlson. Jim was born on April 30, 1946, to Doug "Sven" and Betty Lou (Anderson) Carlson.
Jim lived a life marked by dedication and hard work. He had a long career in the elevator industry, working from 1969 to 2008. He instilled this tradition in his three sons, who continue to work in the industry, a source of immense pride for him. Jim was not only their father but also their mentor, guiding them through life's challenges, and always being a phone call away. He enjoyed being a homebody, spending countless hours restoring vintage gas pumps, vehicles, and meticulously caring for his property while putting countless miles on his trusty golf cart. It was during these quiet moments that he forged a special connection with the deer that frequented his backyard. Outside of working, Jim also cherished spending evenings with his wife, Barbie, watching their favorite shows. He also enjoyed Grandma Barbie's kitchen, most notably her chocolate chip cookies and anything lemon flavored.
Known affectionately as "Grandpa Hammer" by his grandchildren, Jim was always ready to help with any task and provided honest, straightforward advice. His grandchildren could always count on him for a hug, a witty remark, and a piece of candy from his candy jar. In his later years, Jim took on projects with "The Neighbor Lady" which he jokingly referred to his granddaughter Mikayla as, teaching her how to do things the right way (AKA his way.) Too long of a to-do list to say goodbye so soon, we can only imagine that Jim/Grandpa Hammer is up there still putzing around, probably working on a project for the big guy upstairs.
Jim is survived by his wife, Barbara "Barbie" Carlson, his three sons, Robert "Jimmy" (Jung) Carlson, Steven "Beaver" Carlson, and Joe Carlson; his brother, Phil (Mary) Carlson; his sister, Kathy (Gene) Coleman; stepchildren Mike (Valerie) Hinkel and Michelle Zimpel; nine granddaughters, three grandsons, and six great-grandkids. He is preceded in death by his parents, Doug and Betty Lou, and his sister, Mary-Ann.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at the Grandstrand Funeral Home (6580 Main St) in North Branch. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Following services, friends and family are welcome to gather at the American Legion (6439 Elm St) in North Branch.

Jim and I go waaay back! From First grade (when our journey began), into 6th grade when we were Sweethearts!! Our paths didn't cross much during our high school years, but I did have a chance to catch up with him at one of our last class reunions. I'm sorry to hear of his passing, but it sounds like he definitely left his mark on his close family.
