Jim grew up in Britt and moved to Aurora in 1951. He proudly served his country with the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a 1949 graduate of Iowa State College having attained a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.
He was a long-time member and past moderator of New England Congregational Church. He was a long-time member and past president of the Rotary Club of Aurora United and a Paul Harris Fellow. For many years, Jim tutored children in math at McCleery school and reading at Greenman school. He received a Best in West, Golden Apple, and Blackhawk award.
Jim worked at Layne Western Company for 35 years and retired in 1986 as Vice President and District Manager. He was a life member of the National and Illinois Society of Professional Engineers. He was also a life member of the American Water Works Association.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years, Betty.
Jim is survived by his 3 sons, Bill (Jane), Chuck (Barb), Mark (Kathryn), and daughter Sue (Scott) Meyer; grandchildren Samantha Wredling, Briana Carson, Amanda (Adam) Steil, Zachary (Sarah) Carson, Cody Carson, James Meyer and Jacob Meyer; great-grandchildren Declan, Brayden, Sawyer, and Emelia.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack Carson, Dr. Tom Carson, and Dr. Dick Carson; an infant daughter, Audry Jean; daughter-in-law Sandra; and grandson-in-law, Scott Wredling.
Jim enjoyed travel, golf, hunting, farming, and cars. He loved his dogs.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 11 AM at New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora, IL 60506. The family will receive friends after the service in the narthex.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jim's name may be directed to New England Congregational Church or the Rotary Club of Aurora United.

Jim Carson was one of a kind. He was a neighbor, friend, father figure, helper and BEST MAN at our wedding. Jim & Betty came over several years for Super Bowl Sunday. We are going to miss Jim because no one else is like him. Love you Jim! -Clarice & Greg Dillard
