I received a phone message from John King that one of our classmates had died. That is not an uncommon message at this age, but coming from John, I had a sinking fear that it was Jim Chess. Sadly, my fear was well-founded.
I met Jim at John Marshall Law School in the early 80's. He was a bright guy, with a PhD in street smarts and common sense. Jim had a couple of years on me, and along with John King was gracious enough to bring me into a kind if study/support group that helped me navigate the challenges of working full time and attending law school at night. John loved to cook and Jim loved the Beatles. Me...I was just grateful to have somebody to share thoughts with as we morphed into attorneys.
I am embarrassed to say that after graduation we drifted apart. I moved to Florida, and Jim stayed true to his roots. Although the world has turned many times, I remember those years like it was last week.
I'm sorry Jim died at such a young age. To those who loved him, I offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences. For them, and all of Jim's friends, I am sure that the world is a duller and less colorful place.
God Speed, Jim Chess, and thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your life so many years ago. You were a real class act.

Jimmy, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed golfing with you the past 30 or so years. You always made it fun. You will be dearly missed my friend. If there is a golf course up there, I will ask you to get a tee-time when I am ready to join you. God bless you and your family.
