James Culbertson Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

James "Jim" H. Culbertson
February 6, 1941 - October 4, 2025
James "Jim" H. Culbertson, lovingly known by many as "Cubby" or "Spanky," passed away peacefully at the age of 84.
Jim was the devoted husband of the late Sharon Culbertson, and the proud father of Dawn M. Gonzalez (Michael) and James E. Culbertson (Amy). He was the cherished son of the late James V. Culbertson and Carol Williams, and the beloved brother of the late Karen Guevara, Charles Culbertson, Ruey Angellotti, and Carolyn Culbertson.
He is survived by his adored grandchildren - JP, PJ, Ian, Max, Reese, and Elizabeth - who brought immense joy to his life. Jim attended every one of their activities, from band concerts to sporting events, always their biggest supporter and proudest fan.
A 1959 graduate of Livonia Bentley High School, Jim remained an active member of his class alumni. He went on to attend Adrian College, where he was a dedicated member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Michigan Alpha Chapter, and was later honored with the Distinguished Gentleman's Award.
Jim enjoyed a successful 32-year career with Ford Motor Company, where he was admired for his professionalism, drive, and kindness. Outside of work, he was a man of many interests - a talented woodworker who even crafted his own golf clubs, an avid golfer, and a lover of poker, skiing, and yardwork.
A longtime member of the Walnut Creek Country Club, Jim proudly served as President in 1986. He also gave back to his community through service on the South Lyon Planning Commission (2010–2013), and volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Fox Theatre.
Jim lived his life with humor, integrity, and heart - always ready to lend a hand, share a laugh, or tell a great story.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home in Novi. Visitation will continue on Saturday, November 8, 2025, beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM.
Donations in Jim's memory may be made to Angela Hospice or the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, causes close to his heart.
Jim's final place of rest will be at Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills, Michigan, where he will be reunited with his beloved wife, Sharon.
