Obituary for James Dennis Eason
Mr. James Dennis Eason, 58, of Hamilton Heights, Manhattan, New York, departed this life unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.
James was born on August 6, 1967, in Gates County, North Carolina, and was raised in Waterbury, Connecticut. He earned his high school diploma in 1985 from Wilby High School and later joined the U.S. National Guard, serving his full term before continuing his education at Southern Connecticut State University where he earned his bachelor's degree in Science. After graduating, James embarked on his life journey, residing in Miami, FL; Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale, FL; Brooklyn, NY; and finally Manhattan, NY. He was employed for many years at LaGuardia Airport, working as an agent in the travel industry.
He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings William (Keisha) and Edward Eason of Waterbury, CT; sisters Deborah Eason of Clayton, DE, and Patricia Eason (Nigel Burke) of Waterbury, CT; aunt Dora M. Kee of Prospect, CT; uncle Deacon Robert L. Kee Sr. of Waterbury, CT; nieces Lily Cooper, Makhia Eason, and Enasia Eggleston; and many cousins, including Cheryl Kee, and Cherron Freeman, Robert L. Kee Jr. and Monique Kee,. He also leaves behind a close circle of chosen family and friends whom he loved deeply - among them Angel Antonio Ruiz and Kenneth K. Parham - along with countless co-workers and community members whose lives he touched profoundly. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Ruby (Kee) Eason.
James lived a joyful and full life on his own terms, radiating happiness, warmth, and generosity. He also had a razor-sharp wit and did not suffer fools lightly, preferring to express his opinions bluntly and with impeccable comedic timing. Known for his charm and kind heart, he was a devoted friend, a passionate traveler, a nature lover and an unapologetic foodie. His love for exploration took him around the world, often in the company of friends. In recent years, he traveled to Panama, Portugal, the Mediterranean, and Mexico, but his journeys also included destinations such as Russia, Thailand, Brazil, Colombia (where he learned Spanish), Puerto Rico, Turkey, Greece, Spain, and many others.
A lifelong health enthusiast, James was endlessly curious about wellness trends and alternative remedies. He enjoyed horror films, spent countless hours watching airplane documentaries on YouTube, and continually expanded his skills - taking courses in solar panel installation and motorcycle riding. Deeply reflective, he sought truth through independent news and podcasts. In recent years, he dedicated himself to emotional growth and self-development, embracing a healing journey with openness and intention.
James was a devoted animal lover, and in 2013 he rescued Reba - the dog who became the love of his life. After Reba passed, James volunteered with the ASPCA East Harlem, the same shelter that had lovingly cared for her in her final days. He also provided support to others through local food pantries, working to reduce food insecurity among migrant communities in New York City.
James loved riding his bike through the city, capturing its rhythm through photography, and experimenting with drones. Above all, he expressed his love through cooking: he often baked for co-workers and his famous four cheese lobster mac and cheese which was a source of great pride and joy among family and friends. A proud Harlem homeowner, James treasured his four-story building and was always immersed in home improvement projects. He was often seen running up and down the building, making frequent trips to Home Depot - and almost every time, returning with a new plant to brighten his home.
James was defined by his unwavering commitment to social justice, liberation, and love. His memory lives on through the countless lives he brightened, the causes he uplifted, and the joy he so effortlessly shared.
A public Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Friday, October 24, from 12–3 PM at International Funeral Service of New York II, located at 1761 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY. An urn and photo will be present to honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA in James's memory: ASPCA Memorial Donation Link.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
