James Richard Filak

James "Jim" Filak, age 79 of Rochester Hills, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2024. Loving father of Mark (Valeria Petrozzi) Filak, Carrie (Mike) Almassian, and Tracy (Steve) Kotwicki. Proud grandpa to Madeleine, Emilia, Soren, Nathan, Meredith, Claire, Matthew, and Alice. Jim is survived his partner, Kay Dudek Baran, and brothers Richard and Kenneth. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dottie, and brother, David.
Jim was born on August 23, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, to Joseph and Jane Filak. He was the oldest of 4 boys. Jim attended the University of Detroit, where he earned an bachelor and masters degrees in accounting. He married Dottie Vandewalle in 1970 and they raised their 3 children in Rochester Hills. Jim worked as a CPA for nearly 50 years, most of those years servicing his community through his own practice. Despite having a love-hate relationship with golf, Jim was often seen with a golf club in his hand trying to perfect his swing. He enjoyed spending time with his family, including vacations to Williamsburg, attending various sporting events, and family gatherings with his children and grandchildren. Jim loved mystery novels, coffee, a good scotch, and dancing.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 19th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, 1400 Inglewood Ave., Rochester, Michigan. Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. The family will hold a memorial luncheon at the Royal Park Hotel, 600 E. University Dr., Rochester, at 12:30 p.m.
