Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
James Bullivant Filler, 72, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life peacefully Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the West Virginia Caring Hospice Inpatient Center in Elkins from complications of renal disease.
Jim was born Friday, June 19, 1953, in Arlington, VA, the third child of the late John "Jack" William Filler and Genevieve Edith Bullivant Filler. He married Denton "Dee" Adams, who survives at home.
Also left to cherish his memory are cousins, Bonnie (Butcher) Brandon and Lynn Bullivant with whom Jim maintained close relationships, and faithful pup, Chippy.
Jim began his adult life as a Benedictine monk studying theology at St Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana. He received his nursing LPN, ADN and BSN education at Davis & Elkins and later graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Master of Nursing Science degree. He was first in his class.
Among his accomplishments, Jim was co-founder and clinical manager of The Havens, a Charlotte based free HIV/AIDS clinic where he mentored students from UNC and Duke. He was the first nurse in NC to be nationally certified in HIV/AIDS nursing and was honored with induction in North Carolina's Great 100 nurses for his service to the Commonwealth. Jim was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society of Nursing and was a current member of the Elkins-Randolph Board of Health.
Jimmy's request for cremation was honored. Memorial contributions may be sent to Davis & Elkins School of Nursing.
