James Vernon Frost, affectionately known as, "Frosty", passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on July 2, 2025, in Round Rock, Texas. Born on March 7, 1944, in Independence, Missouri, to Thelma Grace Coulter and Vernon Allen Frost, Jim's early years were spent in Liberal, Kansas, before the family relocated to Bellaire, Texas, in 1951. He was predeceased by his parents, Thelma and Vernon, and his siblings, Janene and Jack Frost.
Jim is survived by his soulmate and devoted wife of 58 years, Sherri; his daughters, Tonya Frost, Tiffany Frost Simental; son-in-law, Jason Simental; grandchildren, Austin, Wesley, and wife, Kori Van Noordt, Jaida, and Jace Simental; great- granddaughter, Ariyah Van Noordt, plus many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor at 11 am on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at RockPointe Church, 1070 CR 177, Leander, TX 78641. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim Frost may be sent to the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, Texas, on behalf of his grandson, Jace Simental or to the Rock Pointe Church.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Frosty returned to his Bellaire, Texas roots where he began crafting surfboards for Blaker Surfboards with his free time spent catching waves, songwriting, and playing the guitar. His musical passion led to the formation of the Misfits, later renamed The Lost & Found, a Houston band with Jim on lead guitar and some of his closest friends: Peter Black, James Harrell, and Steve Webb. The band gained local popularity with their unique evolving psychedelic rock sound, performing at Love Street Light Circus, La Maison a Go-Go, and other venues alongside other Texas artists, including the 13th Floor Elevators. Their growing friendship with Roky Erickson, John Ike Walton, and Stacy Sutherland led them to International Artists, where they released a.45 and one album, then went on tour with the Music Machine.
During this time, Jim fell in love with Sherri Lea Breon, who was also born March 7th, whom he married on October 10, 1966, in Bellaire, TX. With the birth of their first daughter, Tonya Michelle, Jim's focus began shifting towards providing stability for his family through real estate construction and development. Creativity flowed easily for Frosty, from surfboards to painting, woodworking, design, and music. He was a true artist who never stopped making music.
Soon after the arrival of their second daughter, Tiffany Grace, the family relocated to the Austin area in 1977, where he enjoyed success in residential, multifamily, and commercial real estate. Eventually, both Jim and Sherri's families joined them in the Austin area. Frosty followed his heart back to the water through bass tournament fishing and working as a Central Texas fishing guide, eventually opening Lone Star Tackle in Round Rock, TX, in 1985. He built a homestead on the North Shore of Lake Travis in the early 1990's and retired in 1995 as they became empty nesters.
Jim and Sherri explored the US together in their RV, treasuring their adventurous time and making lasting memories before settling back down at Lake Travis to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Frosty was
both honored and happy to be inducted to the Texas Surf Museum Hall of Fame last year. The music played on for Frosty at the Lone Star Bar in Jonestown, TX, where he jammed with friends until the very end when the music finally did stop on July 2, 2025, as he passed peacefully, surrounded with love and his family legacy by his side.
