James Marvin Funderburg, lovingly known to everyone as Papa James, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, in Mineral Wells, Texas, at the age of 93.
Born on January 22, 1932, in South Carolina, Papa James spent most of his 93 years as a proud resident of Augusta, Georgia. After the passing of his beloved wife, Rosa Mae Funderburg, September 12, 2008, he moved to Mineral Wells, Texas, to live with his family.
At an early age, Papa James answered the call to serve his on country, joining the United States Army where he proudly served for 20 years. His courage and commitment took him through both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. During his distinguished military career, he earned numerous commendations, including the Korean Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, a Bronze Star for his heroic service during the Korean War, and four Bronze Service Stars for his service in Vietnam.
After moving to Mineral Wells, Papa James lived with his daughter Darlene Denson for several years. As his health and mobility began to decline, he was lovingly cared for at The Serenity House for Seniors, an assisted living center with a devoted and compassionate staff who treated him like family.
Papa James was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Funderburg and Viola Cushman Funderburg; his brother, Franklin Funderburg; his sister, Marie Cunningham; his wife, Rosa Mae Funderburg; and his son, Norman Funderburg.
He is survived by his daughters Darlene Denson and Delores Needham; his son Tommy Funderburg; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who will continue to carry his legacy forward with love and pride.
In his final days, surrounded by family, Papa James was at peace and ready to go home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Though his presence will be deeply missed, his loved ones take comfort in knowing this world is not our home and that one day, they will be reunited in Heaven.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date by the immediate family.
