James Martin “Marty” Gregg, Sr., age 68, of Blackberry Inn Road, Weaverville, passed away on November 03, 2024.
Mr. Gregg was born on June 29, 1956, in Buncombe County to the late Nancy Jeanette Wilson and Horace Fred “Ted” Gregg. Marty was a graduate of North Buncombe High School. He joined the US Army after graduation. He was first with the Ranger Battalion in Fort Stewart, Georgia, then serving with C 4th of 9th in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. From there he joined Special Forces in Ft. Bragg, NC.
He served in 5th, 1st, and 3rd Special Forces traveling throughout Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. He was HALO and a Special Operations Diver. He participated in several missions and in Operation Uphold Democracy as well as working in joint task force missions with the DEA and local law enforcement in the war on drugs.
After 21 years of service, he retired with the rank of Master Sergeant and worked a short while with the Buncombe County Sheriffs Dept. at the jail. He later went on to work as a private military contractor as a military instructor further serving in the Middle East. He ended his work career with Mars Hill College.
Marty loved life and travel. But most of all he loved his kids and grandkids. He was a dad and grandad.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Logan James Gregg. Surviving is his daughter, Christina Lynn Lee (husband Tyler); son, James Martin “Marty” Gregg Jr. (wife Desiree); brothers, William Erwin Gregg (wife Elizabeth) and Fred Noble Gregg (wife Marti); grandchildren, Devon Gallien, Dylan Black, Danica Lee, and Gabriella Gregg; partner, Tonya Grant, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Gregg’s funeral service will be held at 11:00am., Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Newbridge Baptist Church, Woodfin, with Pastor Brian Buckner officiating.
The family will receive friends the evening before from 5:00pm – 7:00pm, on Friday, November 08, 2024, at West Family Funeral Services, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, NC 28787.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VFW or the Joy Makers special needs adults ministry at Newbridge Baptist Church.
