James Edward Hanlon, age 91, passed away peacefully from this life to his eternal home with God on April 4, 2025. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 30, 1933 as the second child of Leroy and Helen Hanlon (Callahan).
After graduating high school, he worked for the Guaranty Trust Company of Manhattan, New York before going to college. While attending St. John's University in Queens, New York, Jim was called into service by the US Army during the Korean War as a military policeman. Upon the completion of his military service, he returned to St. John's University where he graduated and later married Joyce Mary Carr of Staten Island, New York in 1961.
Jim soon began his business career with the Columbia Broadcast System (CBS) which led to a position with WBBM Radio in Chicago, Illinois for several years. In 1967 he was asked to return to New York City by CBS to assume his new role as Controller of the New York Yankees Baseball Club. He was with the Yankees until CBS decided to sell the New York Yankees in 1970 and was asked to return to CBS to assist in the launching of the spin off company, Viacom Inc., as a Vice President. Jim was next to be called upon by Viacom Inc. to expand the company's cable television operations in Long Island, New York as President of Suffolk Cablevision located in Central Islip, New York. In this position, he also served as the President of the New York State Cable Television Association. Several years later, Jim received an offer from Buford Cable Television in Tyler, Texas to operate and grow the company's cable television nationwide operations. In 1981, Jim recognized an opportunity and elected to go off on his own and created the cable television company MCT Cablevision Inc. (MCT) providing cable television to the Lake Palestine area of East Texas. After several years, MCT was sold to Northland Cable Television (Northland) of Seattle Washington in which he was asked to become the Texas Regional Vice President of Northland's Texas cable television locations. Upon retiring from Northland, he decided to open a Berkshire Hathaway real estate franchise in Tyler, Texas as it's broker and later choosing to sell the franchise upon his final retirement.
Jim loved his work but also greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, especially family vacations and destination gatherings. He loved to fish with a special passion for deep sea fishing. As an artist, he loved to paint and draw with his work winning several awards in Pennsylvania contests. Traveling, golf, Texas A&M Football games along with being an avid New York Yankees and Texas Rangers fan fed his soul. Always active in the church, Jim was an usher for many years in both New Jersey at St. Cassians Church and in Texas at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
He is survived by his children Mark, Cathy and Timothy and his wife Katelyn Jo Hanlon along with his grandchildren James Davis, Ryan Davis, Caitlin Davis, Joseph Hanlon, Emma Hanlon and Cole Hanlon. Additionally; he is survived by his brother-in-law Richard Carr of Pennsylvania and several nephews in Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.
Jim was preceded in death by Joyce his wife of 54 years and his brother John Hanlon.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be conducted on April 25, 2025 at 2 PM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler, Texas.
Please join his family and friends in both mourning the loss and celebrating the life of Jim Hanlon by offering the following prayer on his behalf.
"May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rains fall softly on your fields.
And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand." www.stewartfamilyfuneral.com

I had the great pleasure of working with Jim from 1985 until I left Northland in 2000. We spent hundreds of hours on the phone during those years and I was always impressed with Jim´s professionalism and business acumen. He was a fun co-worker. My email is [email protected].

A few of the Northland crew would like to send Jim's family a card. Would it be possible to send a mailing address to me at [email protected]? Thank you. Greg Ferrer

What a fascinating life. And obviously "a life well lived". I feel lucky to have known and worked with him.

I had the pleasure of working with Jim at Northland from around 1986 till around 2000. He was quite the gentleman but also had a great sense of humor. He was a lot of fun to work with. I think that it's safe to say that he will be greatly missed by all his former Northland coworkers.
