James Joseph Harley

James Joseph Harley passed away peacefully at Kaiser Hospital in Fontana California on Thursday March 14, 2024.
Jim was born on March 6, 1945 in Buffalo, New York to Eleanor and Alexander Harley. Jim, along with his parents, 2 sisters, and 5 brothers moved to Fontana Ca from Buffalo, NY in 1957.
As a youth in Fontana, Jim had many paper routes throughout the city and also worked as a Butcher for the Fontana Meat Company. Jim attended Fontana Junior High School and graduated from Fontana High School in 1963. While in High School he was a part of the Swim Team and the Drama Dept. He performed in many musicals and plays where he earned his Thespian Card.
After High School, Jim joined the U.S. Navy. He was active duty from January 1963 through January 1966. He served in the Vietnam War aboard the USS Hornet as a Yeoman to the Admiral. After active duty he was a Reserve from 1966-1969.
While as a Reserve, Jim married his High School Sweetheart Carol Petrich on June 11, 1966. They were married for 57 years and had one daughter named Andrea.
Jim was an entrepreneur and had many occupations. Such as, working for Lafell Manufacturing designing the struts for the first Rocket that landed on the moon. He also helped with making and designing the shafts for Arnold Palmer's golf clubs. He owned a cuppling and rebar steel business. But for the past 45 years he ran and operated All Cities Permit Services as a Permit Consultant.
Jim loved the City of Fontana. He belonged to numerous local organizations, such as, The Elks Lodge, The American Legion, The Chamber of Commerce, and the Slovenian Lodge to name a few. His greatest love through was Fontana Girls Softball. Jim purchased and built the softball fields located on Mango Ave. so girls had a place to play softball without sharing a field space with the boys. He was President of the league for over 20 years. He was always there to help families whether it was purchasing uniforms, equipment, gloves, cleats, or helping with registration fees. All that mattered to Jim was supporting the girls and the sport they loved. Jim definitely played a huge part in hundreds if not thousands of girls' childhoods and made lifelong friends. After he was done being President of Fontana Girls Softball, he sold the fields back to the city of Fontana for $1.00.
Jim is survived by his wife Carol Harley; Daughter Andrea Harley-Bianquini (Anderson Bianquini); Grand Daughters Gabriella Harley and Isabella Harley-Bianquini; Great Grandson Dakota James Harley; Son Alexander James Harley; Daughters Savannah Harley and Kennedy Harley; Sister Julie Smith; Brothers Robert Harley (Molly Harley), David Harley (Georgie Harley), and Mark Harley.
Along with many nieces and nephews.
