James Roland Harrell, 87 of Vanderbilt, passed away at home on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
Born on May 9, 1937, in Detroit, he was the son of Roland and Drexal (Pauly) Harrell. Jim grew up in East Detroit and was a graduate of East Detroit High School.
Jim attended Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti where he received his bachelor's degree and master’s degree in education.
On September 7, 1957, Jim married Carol Ann Boske in Fraser, Michigan. They made their home in East Detroit while Jim enjoyed a lengthy career as a teacher and counselor at Roseville Public Schools. Early in his career he taught math and science in junior high school, later becoming a counselor at Roseville Junior High and later at Roseville High School.
After retiring, Jim and Carol moved up north to Vanderbilt, enlarging what had been their cabin and making it their permanent home.
Throughout his life, Jim enjoyed playing guitar. He was in a band from high school through the 1970’s. Later, he enjoyed sing-a-longs with neighbors. He enjoyed shooting pool and snowmobiling, often stopping for an occasional “snow picnic.”
Jim is survived by his wife, Carol, and his son, Mike. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Drexal.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes, his family will remember him privately. Please share your memories and personal messages with the family on the guestbook below.
