James Axel "Jim" Harris passed away on October 15, 2025, in Kanab, Utah, at the age of 80. Born on November 6, 1944, in Duluth, Minnesota, Jim lived a life marked by service-to his country, his family, and his community. Jim proudly served in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969 during the Vietnam War. His naval service took him across the Pacific with tours in Japan and Australia, as well as time stationed at San Francisco's Treasure Island. Jim had a long and successful career with Lucent (formerly AT&T) Technologies. For 34 years, he served as a Service Communications Installer. After retiring in 1997, Jim relocated to Kanab, Utah-a place that would become both home and canvas for his continued adventures. In Kanab, Jim took on a new role as a water inspector for Kane County. He supervised the installation of several large-scale water infrastructure projects including multiple 500,000-gallon water tanks and lines. Around town he was known as a dependable handyman lending his skills generously to neighbors and friends alike. A gifted welder and mechanic, he could often be found under the hood of a vehicle or behind a welding torch. An avid outdoorsman, Jim spent four decades hunting elk in Colorado and exploring rugged terrain across California, Nevada, and Utah in his 4x4s and ATVs. He dedicated decades as an active volunteer with the California Association of 4-Wheel Drive Clubs and was one of the founders of the Utah-Arizona ATV Club. He is survived by his daughter Andrea Harris; son-in-law Douglas Baker; 2 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; brother Larry Harris (wife Joyce); and former spouse Lynda Harris (Sether). He also provided devoted care for his parents Irene and Vernie Harris during their final years-ensuring they spent their later days surrounded by love and dignity.
