James Buford "Jim" Hartline, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, in Mt. Plymouth, Florida, at the age of 89. Born on April 10, 1936, in Macedonia, Alabama, Jim lived a life full of adventure, creativity, and dedication.
The family will receive friends Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Johnson Funeral Home in Richlands NC, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. A graveside service to follow at Onslow Memorial Park at 1:00 pm.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he learned honor and courage. Following his military service, he became a well-known radio disc jockey, sharing his love for music with countless listeners. His expertise in electronics led him to a distinguished career as an electronics engineer, where he was recognized for his innovative work, including the creation of the first car cellphone for President Lyndon B. Johnson at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.
A man of many talents, Jim was an avid guitarist who found joy in playing music. He was deeply interested in genealogy, dedicating time to uncovering his family's rich history. His love for electronics extended beyond his professional life, and he enjoyed tinkering with gadgets and exploring new technologies. Jim also had a green thumb, finding peace and satisfaction in gardening. His commitment to health and wellness was evident in his daily life, and he shared his knowledge through writing, contributing to books and genealogy websites.
Jim's educational journey included attending Snead State Community College and Devry University, where he honed the skills that would serve him throughout his varied career.
On June 27, 1964, Jim married the love of his life, Ruth Hood Hartline, in Conway, South Carolina. Together, they built a loving family and shared over six decades of cherished memories.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth Dixon Hood, and their four daughters: Anna Ruth Pensyl, Susanne Robinson, Tami Marie Burke, and Jami Hartline Hatem. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Ora James Hartline and Annie Evans Hartline and his siblings: Mary Ellen Hartline Walden Tidmore, Bessie Marie Hartline Amos, Rayford Ora Hartline, Audie B. Hartline Allen Hodgens, Annie Ruth Hartline Dukes, Doil Nelson Hartline, Wynema Gail Hartline, and Julia Faye Hartline.
Jim's legacy of kindness, innovation, and love will be remembered by all who knew him. His spirit lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, and his contributions to his field and community will not be forgotten.
