James Raymond "Ray" Hilbert II

James Raymond Hilbert II (Ray) March 3, 1951 – July 17, 2025 James Raymond Hilbert II (Ray), age 74, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Ray was the son of the late James Raymond Hilbert, Sr. and Anna Ruth (Ball) Hilbert. He was a 1970 graduate of Bishop David High School and enjoyed a long career as a production worker at Philip Morris, from which he retired. Following his retirement, Ray continued to serve his community as the Maintenance Supervisor at Epiphany Catholic Church. Ray had a deep appreciation for the natural world. He was passionate about geology and loved exploring mountainous landscapes-often traveling to hike and take in scenic views. A lifelong fan of college sports, he could often be found cheering on his favorite teams. Above all, Ray cherished time spent with his family and found great joy in being a father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Hilbert. He is survived by his children, Chris Hilbert (Allison) and Cassady DeWine (Shane); grandchildren, Charlie and Callie; sisters, Marietta Hilbert (Dennis Bristow), Julie Embry (Barry), and Becky Sturgeon (Jim); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He is also remembered by his first wife, Brenda Tucker, and former wife, Ramona Hilbert. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 5:00 PM at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway. Visitation will take place earlier that day from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and following the service until 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome. For those who wish to make an alternate gesture of remembrance, donations may also be made to the National Parks or the Geological Society of America-two causes that reflected Ray's lifelong interests.
