James Robert Hooks, 78, entered into his Heavenly home while at Kitty Askins Hospice Center on Monday, March 11, 2024 after a brief and shocking illness. Robert was the most loving and serving husband to Brenda (Hare) for 58 years, the epitome of a role model Daddy to Michelle and the most doting PaPa ever to Abbie. He was truly a saint on Earth and the angels welcomed Robert to be with them and their Savior.
Robert was born September 13, 1945 to the late Herman and Ada Smith Hooks. He was also preceded in death by his brother Billy Hooks and sister Linda Hooks Fields. Robert worked hard for years in farming the family farm. He also worked at Burlington Industries, and until retirement from APV Baker in 2010. Robert worked even more after retirement serving his beloved community through the food pantry at St. Joseph Methodist Church. He taught Sunday school and was on a number of church committees and a member of the choir for many years at St. Joseph Methodist Church. Robert also spent countless hours ringing the Salvation Army bell and selling brooms and light bulbs for the Pikeville Lions Club. This is an organization he loved dearly and for which he served as President two times. For his dedication and service Robert was awarded the Jack Stickley Fellow as well the Melvin Jones Fellowship and earned his 25 year Monarch Chevron in 2021, the highest recognitions by bestowed by Lions Club and Lions Club International. Robert's love for community is also demonstrated through his dedication as a Pikeville Town Council member for over two decades and for this service the Governor bestowed the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He was also a member of the TAC Board for the City of Goldsboro.
Our hearts are truly BEYOND broken but we have a peace that transcends all understanding, knowing Robert has a home in gloryland that outshines the sun.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont, NC with Reverend Phyllis Vail officiating.
Given Robert's love for all things UNC-CH basketball we know he would be overjoyed to see his friends and family wearing Carolina Blue at his service if possible.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to all those who have reached out and we covet your continued prayers. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial contribution to the Pikeville Lions Club at PO Box 338, Pikeville NC 27863 or to the Ronald McDonald House of the Piedmont Triad 419 S. Hawthorne Road Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
