Obituary of James Milton Kohls
James "Jamie" Kohls was born on June 19, 1950, in Madison, Wisconsin, to the late Eugene Milton and Helen Mae Kohls. He spent his formative years in Pinebluff, Arkansas, where he cherished his childhood memories, many of which were crafted alongside his lifelong best friend, Jim. On September 26, 1971, he exchanged vows with his beloved wife, Deborah "Debby" Rosenfeld Kohls, in Pinebluff. Early in their marriage, they embarked on a new chapter in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where they planted roots and raised their family.
Jamie was an exceptional individual. He commenced his collegiate journey at West Point Military Academy, and as a junior, he transferred to the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, where he earned a degree in Anthropology. His pursuit of anthropological knowledge led him to the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where he attained a master's degree. He continued his scholarly path with doctoral studies in sociology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His professional journey began with SAS programming and culminated in his role as the head of IT at the Sheps Center at UNC, where he later retired.
Jamie was a man of unique passions. He found solace in the world of guitars, adored the company of dogs, loved cooking, and relished basking in the warm sunshine. His profound appreciation for words was unmistakable in his leisurely perusal of the dictionary, and he held a deep affection for The Teachings of Don Juan. His annual family beach trip was a cherished tradition and a source of great happiness.
Jamie is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie, as well as his sister, Donna Kohls Curry, and her husband Bill. He is also survived by his children, Rachel "Shay" Crow and her husband Mike, Jessica Kohls and her partner Jason Alyward, and Reid Kohls and his wife Karina. His legacy continues through them and his grandchildren, Vivian, Vaughn, and Meadow.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the SPCA of Raleigh or Carolina Boxer Rescue.
