James R. Mahan

 

James (Jim) R. Mahan, at the age of 82, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023. Jim was born on December 21st, 1940 in Indianapolis, Indiana where he grew up.  He was a devoted husband to Judy (Dudley) Mahan, his wife of 60 years; loving brother to Janet ­­­­­Ellis; loving father to Kelly (Rick Pescovitz) Mahan; Rick (Pamela) Mahan and Brent (Katie) Mahan; grandfather to Angie (Mark) Prosise, Rachel (Drew) Carson, James Mahan, Max (Lacy) Pescovitz, Madeleine Pescovitz, Anna Pescovitz, Emma Mahan, Peyton Mahan, Grant Mahan; great grandfather to Tyler Prosise, Hailey Prosise, and Frances Carson. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Edith Mahan, father Robert Mahan, brother Richard Mahan. Jim graduated from Manual High School in 1959 and received both his undergraduate and Masters Degree from the University of Cincinnati (UC), where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He wrestled at UC and later became the head wrestling coach with a record of 19-1. He managed Coney Island throughout the 70’s and was in sales for the remainder of his career. Throughout his life, his love for sports, especially the Bengals and the UC Bearcats was a constant. He was a Collegiate Football Official for over 30 years and worked many Division I college bowl games. He held the first down markers with the Bengals for decades before moving up to the press box to run the clock which he also did for UC’s football team. He was a longtime member of UC’s “C” Club and supporter of UC athletics. Upon his retirement, he worked for the NFL as a scout for NFL officials. Jim’s love and pride for his family was evident in all he did and he is well known by all for his love of storytelling and practical jokes. Above all, Jim was kind, honest, and caring. His generosity continues beyond his passing by donating his body to University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. A Memorial Service will be held on November 17th, 2023 at Armstrong Methodist Church, 5125 Drake Rd., 45243. The Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a lunch reception following at The Kenwood Country Club, 6501 Kenwood Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45243 . In memory of Jim Mahan, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Talbert House, care of either Council on Child Abuse or the Fatherhood Project.
