James Maxey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by YANDA & SON FUNERAL HOME - YUKON on Feb. 2, 2026.
James "Jim" Robert Maxey, age 74, passed suddenly on Friday, January 30, 2026 in Yukon, Oklahoma with family by his side. Jim was born on April 19, 1951 in Oklahoma City to L.D. and Roberta (Smith) Maxey. Jim attended Yukon Public Schools and graduated from Yukon High School in 1969. Afterwards, Jim attended El Reno Junior College where he graduated with an Associates Degree in General Studies. He then began attending Central State College, now UCO, in Edmond, Oklahoma. His original goal was to pursue a career in funeral service, but he took a different path after the war draft.

Jim met his wife, Priscilla Jones for the first time in the nursery of First Baptist Church in Yukon and their mothers became close friends. They grew up together and had the same neighborhood friends to pal around with. Even though they were not sweethearts during their school years, she had her eyes on him for as long as she can remember. They finally began dating while in college together at El Reno Junior College. When she noticed after graduation that he started buying furniture and asked him about it, he told her one day, they were going to need it. On a trip to the marketplace together, where the purchase was more furniture, Jim told Priscilla in the parking lot, "well, I guess we should go ahead and get married." Luckily, she agreed. So, on December 1, 1971, they got married at First Baptist Church in Yukon where their story first began in the nursery those many years ago.

On September 18, 1974, they were blessed with their first child, a daughter they named Kelli Elaine Maxey. Then a few years later, on August 12, 1977, they were blessed again with a son they named James Bryan Maxey.

Jim began his first job at C.R. Anthony's in Yukon, where he dressed the mannequins for the store windows. After Anthony's, Jim went to work for T.G.& Y. While employed at T.G.& Y., Jim's creative side was able to shine through as he was placed in charge of the creating and making floats with his friends for the annual Czech Festival in Yukon. One memorable float he created was a man in Czech clothing playing an accordion that moved along with the head. It was no easy feat, but Jim was so inventive he was able to make it happen! Jim went on to work for Hobby Lobby, Office Depot, Office Max, and Staples in management positions. Jim's employment through retirement in 2017 took place with Mustang Public Schools in the shipping and receiving department where he was able to work alongside his wife Priscilla, who was in administration, for many years.

On September 18, 2007, Jim and Priscilla were overjoyed to have their first grandchild, Jack Preston Maxey Dever. Through the 18 years that Jim got to be with his grandson, they became the best of friends and Jim would usually do anything that Jack asked as Jack had him wrapped around his finger! Throughout most of Jack's school years, Jim, known as Pawpaw to Jack, would pick Jack up from school and they would spend hours together. Eventually, when Jack became a licensed driver, Jack would bring his gang of friends over to "Nanny and PawPaw's" house after school for snacks and sodas. The boys were like additional grandkids for Jim and Priscilla, and they would get such a kick out of their conversations and antics.

On January 6, 2020, Jim and Priscilla were thrilled to welcome their second grandchild, Lilianne Maxey. When PawPaw found out that he was having a granddaughter, he was over the moon. He told Bryan that he was glad for a granddaughter that he could spoil as much as Jack. Although Pawpaw's time with Lilianne was shorter, she was so loved by her PawPaw and will always know what a wonderful man he was.

Jim was "Mr. Christmas." It was always his favorite holiday and if you ever went to his house during the season, you know how he would have Christmas decorations in almost every square inch of the house. He would always ask his son or daughter to help him decorate the Christmas trees (he had one in every room), but they never put enough decorations on them for his taste. Just when you thought there was not one centimeter more that could hold an ornament, he would add 50 more to them.

In addition to growing up in First Baptist Church of Yukon, Jim and Priscilla had the honor of worshipping at other churches before becoming founding and active members of Yukon Church, now Yukon Bible Church.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; L.D. & Roberta Maxey and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who welcomed him home to Heaven.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Priscilla Maxey, of the home; Daughter Kelli Dever and grandson Jack Dever of Yukon; Son, Bryan Maxey, wife Lagena and granddaughter Lilianne of Yukon; Brother DeWayne Maxey of Yukon; Sister, Leigh Ann Rausch and husband Kyle of Newalla, OK; Niece Shannon Carrico of Woodward, OK; Niece Amanda Chandler and husband Matt of Norman, OK; Niece Amy Hood and husband Jeremy of Guthrie, OK; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 4 at Yukon Bible Church, Yukon, OK, with interment following at the Yukon Cemetery.
