James V. McCorkle, a man of intelligence, creativity, and an endlessly interesting character, passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 27, 2025, at the age of 70 in Oaklawn, IL. Born on July 2, 1954, in Chicago, IL, Jim's early years in the Windy City shaped a life that would be full of adventure, service, and the joy of mastering various skills.
Jim's educational journey led him to DeVry University, where he honed his skills in electronics. His career as an Electronic Technician at Illinois Bell was marked by dedication and an unwavering commitment to the community he served. The highlight of his professional life came on January 16, 1992, when Jim's bravery and quick thinking were put to the test during gas explosions and fires in Chicago's Near North Side. Without hesitation, Jim evacuated nearly 20 residents from an apartment building and single-handedly shut off the gas meters in each of the 12 apartments, averting what could have been a major disaster. "Jim's heroism makes us proud," said the President of Illinois Bell, commending his daring actions.
Beyond his work, Jim was known for his love of electronics, computing and technology. His hands, equally skilled at the keyboard and the crafting table, produced beautiful quilts that were both works of art and embodiments of comfort. Jim also found solace and joy in the kitchen, where his cooking and meat-smoking skills were the stuff of family legend. An avid gardener, Jim's backyard was a testament to his green thumb, providing tomatoes, potatoes and produce.
His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing and hunting, activities that allowed him to embrace the tranquility of nature.
Jim is survived by his beloved sister Mary, and his cherished nieces, Erin and Sara, who will miss his guidance, wit, and the warmth of his presence. He was a pillar of strength and a source of wisdom in their lives, and his legacy will live on through the stories they share and the memories they hold dear.
As we say goodbye to James V. McCorkle, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and perseverance.
Though Jim has left this earthly realm, his spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him and the many lives he touched.
