North Providence - James McCurley, of Gray Street, a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, and proud Navy veteran, passed away on January 13, 2024, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, at the age of 79. He was the beloved husband of Geraldine (Bombardier) McCurley, to whom he was married to for the past fifty-six years.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, a son of the late John Bono and Agnes McLeren, he had lived in North Providence for the past forty-seven years. He was a graduate of Johnson & Wales University, earning his Associate's Degree in Business.
James was a dedicated employee, having worked as a lineman for Blackstone Valley Electric Co., later known as Eastern Utilities, until his retirement in 1996.
Outside of work, James mostly enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends, cherishing every moment he spent with his loved ones. His legacy is defined by the strong emphasis he placed on family values and the enduring love he shared with those around him. He also had a passion for food and cooking, and a compassionate heart for animals, particularly dogs. He devoted his time volunteering at the Hotel for Homeless Dogs in Cumberland where he would foster dogs and often arranged for numerous donations to support the shelter.
As a veteran of the United States Navy, James proudly served his country during the Vietnam War era serving on the U.S.S. Charles H. Roan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, James J. McCurley, and his wife Jennifer, of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Shawn McCurley, and his wife Hillary, of Cumberland; and two granddaughters, Addison McCurley and Nora McCurley. He was the brother of the late William McCurley, Mary Tietz, and Elizabeth Dwyer.
A celebration of his remarkable life will be arranged for a future date in late spring/early summer 2024. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
