James Leroy McDowell Jr., known affectionately to friends and family as Jim, passed away on December 31, 2025, in
Columbiaville, Michigan. Born on November 12, 1954, in
Lapeer, Michigan, Jim was a man whose life was marked by unwavering love, a passion for the outdoors, and a dedication to his family.
Jim's journey began as the son of James and Velma (Farrington) McDowell, and he grew up with the loving guidance of his grandparents, Clifford and Florence McDowell. His early years were filled with the simple joys of small-town life and the formation of lifelong friendships. Jim's parents and grandparents preceded him in death, leaving him with a legacy of kindness and strength that he would carry throughout his life.
On March 9, 1973, Jim married his loving wife, Doris Loveless, in a ceremony in
Columbiaville, Michigan, that would mark the beginning of a partnership filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. Together, they raised two sons, James III (Sheila) and John (Rebecca), and the joy of his life, his granddaughter Aubrey. Jim's role as a husband, father, and grandfather was the one he cherished most, and his family was the cornerstone of his existence.
Professionally, Jim was known as a jack of all trades, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His work history were testaments to his belief in the value of hard work. Jim's selfless nature meant he was often the first to offer assistance, whether to a family member, a friend, or a stranger.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim found solace and excitement in hunting and fishing, activities that allowed him to immerse himself in the beauty of nature. His love for the open road was evident in his passion for motorcycle riding, with his Harley Davidson being his trusted companion on many adventures. At home, his dog Willy was a constant source of joy and companionship.
Jim's talents were many, and his ability to fix and build was a skill that benefited many. He was a true craftsman, taking pride in his ability to solve problems and create with his hands. In quiet moments, Jim could be found strumming his guitar, filling the room with music that was as heartfelt as it was melodious.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as selfless, wise, and passionate. His guidance was sought by many, and his advice was always given with thoughtfulness and care. Jim's legacy is one of love, generosity, and a life well-lived. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
