Jim Mitchener passed away on July 31, 2022, in Roanoke, Virginia. He was born July 19, 1989, in Greenville, North Carolina, the only child of mother Cary Kendall Mitchener, deceased 2013, and father James Samuel Mitchener III, of Pinehurst, North Carolina. Maternal grandparents Donald John Kendall and Lillian Graves Kendall, Fredericksburg, Virginia, and paternal grandparents James Samuel Mitchener, Jr. and Sara Carton Mitchener, Laurinburg, North Carolina, are deceased.
Jim attended North Cross School in Roanoke, and was a 2007 graduate of The Episcopal High School, in Alexandria, Virginia. He played on the varsity golf team for three seasons, and was active in music and the arts. At his commencement exercises he received the Alexander Jennette Johnston Award for Excellence in Performing Arts.
He graduated from High Point University, in High Point, North Carolina, in 2011, with a Bachelor of Science degree, and furthered his education in the School of Nursing, College of Health Sciences, in Roanoke. He was a Registered Nurse and worked eight years in several units with the Carilion Health System in Roanoke.
Jim loved his many friends and family members unconditionally. His family, friends, and coworkers have described him as an outstanding human, with a kind nature, a bright personality, and a wonderful infectious laugh. He had the ability to connect with people from all walks of life and was described as amazingly courteous, affable, and always caring for others. His chosen vocation was nursing, but music was his passion. He was a talented guitarist and musician, but he also loved outdoor life, especially golf, cycling, skiing, boating, and hiking.
If you wish to make a memorial contribution, choose an organization based on his interests in the arts, the environment, and climate change.
A Celebration of the Life of Jim Mitchener will be held at Roanoke Country Club, on August 28, 2022, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, all are invited. A musical tribute will follow the reception.
Interment of ashes at Aquia Episcopal Church, Stafford, Virginia, will take place at a later date.

On behalf of all the staff at Wilderness Adventure, we are so very heartbroken to hear of Jim's passing. He worked with us for a short stint after he took some time off from nursing. Even in that brief time, he made quite an impression... his unparalleled laugh, his willingness to reach out of his comfort zone, and his calm, cool, and genuinely present nature. We are just so sorry albeit grateful to have been touched by his sweet soul. Thank you for coming into our lives, Jim. See you before long

I´m heartbroken about this news. Jim was an incredibly bright personality, with an infectious laugh and a distinct ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He was an incredible musician. I had the pleasure of playing music and golf with him for many years. Rest In Peace, my friend. I´ll remember out times together fondly

"Jim Bean",

"Golly" will you be missed...

John and I both will miss your company at the lake on the weekends and just in general. You were such a pleasure to be around. I enjoyed having you near and talking with you about anything. Your friends love you. I'm glad I got to know you, even for a little while. I hope you are with your mom by now playing her some music and catching up on things. We will miss you here.
