James Nolan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home on Sep. 26, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

James R. "Jim" Nolan, age 89, a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1974, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at his home in Naperville. He was born on October 8, 1935, in Alton, IL.

Beloved husband of Janice "Jan" Nolan (nee Marsh), whom he married February 18, 1961 and who preceded him in death on December 14, 2023, loving father of Marsha J. Nolan of Warrenville, IL, devoted son of the late John R. and Hazel (nee Lawrence) Nolan, son-in-law of the late Carl and Julia (nee Roth) Marsh, fond brother of Norma Pinnell of Godfrey, IL, brother-in-law of the late Carol Anderson, and a dear friend of many.

Jim grew up in Alton, IL and was a December 1952 graduate of Alton High School. He earned a BS in mechanical engineering from Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology). After marrying Jan, the family was transferred around the country due to Jim's career in manufacturing and they finally settled permanently in Naperville in 1974. Jim decided to leave the corporate world in 1990 and bought Maxi-Vac, a small manufacturing company, that kept him busy until he sold the business and retired in 2006.

Jim was active in the Naperville community and served on the Naperville Sesquicentennial Committee. He was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a member of Cress Creek Country Club, both in Naperville. Jim was also very involved as the association board president for over 10 years after they sold their home and adjusted to condo living.

Jim was devoted to his family and friends, always willing to help and support in any way possible. He loved to grill while enjoying a cocktail on his patio, and cheering on the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. He and Jan were gracious hosts and loved entertaining in their beautiful home. He was grateful for the many wonderful places they visited around the world as well as the many years he was able to winter in Bonita Springs, FL with his wife, Jan.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, 1:00 - 3:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL.

A celebration of Jim's life will follow on Wednesday, 3:00 PM in the funeral home.

Private inurnment: Naperville Cemetery.
