James A. O'Leary, of West Roxbury, formerly of Fairhill, Co. Cork, Ireland passed away on April 20, 2025. Beloved husband of the late Brigid "Bridie" (Condon). Devoted father of Maureen E. Johnson and her husband Carl of Foxboro, James T. O'Leary and his wife Catherine of West Roxbury, Brian W. O'Leary and his wife Karen of Chicago, and Katie A. Degnan and her husband Richard of West Roxbury. Son of the late Timothy and Mary (Ryan) O'Leary of Cork, Ireland. Dear brother of Patrick O'Leary and his wife Eileen of London, the late Noel, Arthur, Timothy, Michael, Kathleen, and Finbar O'Leary. Loving grandfather of Erin, Brendan, and Deirdre Johnson, Jimmy, and Joey O'Leary. Longtime companion of Dorothy "Dot" Valenti of West Roxbury. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jim arrived in Boston in July 1956 and stayed with his cousins, Dan and Anne O'Connell, in Roslindale, MA. While attending the Irish dances on Dudley St, Jim met the love of his life, Bridie, and they married in August 1962. Jim and Bridie made their home in West Roxbury in 1970 with their four children and stayed for the next 55 years.
Jim was very active in Holy Name Parish and School and was the President of the Holy Name Irish American Association for 16 years. All four of his children and his grandsons, Jimmy and Joey, attended Holy Name. When not at Holy Name, Jim and Bridie could be found out dancing at any one of the local Irish dances with their large circle of friends and if no dance could be found, you would find them at a friend's house singing, playing cards and having a great time.
Jim loved to travel and going back home to Ireland to see his family, especially his favorite and only sister Kathleen.
But, Jim's favorite thing to do was to spend time with his five grandchildren. You could always find him at a hockey or baseball game, school event or music concert.
He was a member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart (PTAA) commonly known as a Pioneer.
Jim will be deeply missed by his family, his friends and all those that were blessed to cross his path.

Uncle Jim was a gentleman and when Auntie Bridie and uncle Jim used to come to Ireland the visit was always special. My mum (Helen Bourke) was Auntie Bridies only sister and when they used to get together the fun they would have and Jim was always smiling.
When I got married in 1995 they came to Ireland for the wedding and gave my husband a great bit of advice, take care of this girl or you will have to answer to Bridie and they laughed.
We were lucky to visit as a family, my mum (Bridie sister) my sister Mary, myself and my husband one Easter and we were made so welcome by everyone, those memories will forever stay in our hearts.
Our love and thoughts go out to my cousins
Maureen, Jimmy, Brian & Katie and all the family. R.I.P Uncle Jim.
Love from Margaret, Nigel and Katie

Gillian, Avril, Jen and Michael Cunneen.
Our sincere sympathy to you all, Maureen &Carl, Jimmy & Catherine, Brian & Karen, Katie & Richard, Grandchildren , Dot, Uncle Pat & Auntie Eileen. My first recollection of meeting uncle James and Auntie Bridie was when they came to Ireland on their honeymoon and we all went up to Shannon airport to meet them I must have been about 7 years old and we all had little Irish flags with us and waving them from the balcony of Shannon airport when the plane landed ..My first time in Shannon airport and and everyone bursting with excitement to see the Newly weds it was August 1962, all the cars were also decorated with the Irish and American flags. Granny, Grandad, Auntie Kathleen and grandchildren were there.
We stopped in Mallow on the way back to Cork in a pub who were related to Grandad, Denny and Siobhan Murphy and had a breakfast there.
It was my first time to see a plane land in Shannon and our Uncle and Aunt were on it.
We remember Uncle James and Auntie Bridie with love in our hearts. The last time I met U. James was in Killarney in the Arbutus hotel and Auntie Kathleen singing "The boys of Fairhill"

May the road rise up to meet you now,
As stars begin to shine,
And Irish winds blow soft and low
Through groves of ancient pine.
May heaven hold you in its arms
As loved ones bid farewell,
While memories sweet as Irish rain in hearts forever dwell.
Slan leat Uncle James may you Rest in Peace.

Rest in Peace Uncle James. I have such fond memories of grand uncle James (and Bridie) when I spent a summer in Newport RI (2002), from Cork Ireland, and was told by my grandmother Eileen O Leary of Kinsale to make sure and call and meet up. I stayed with them for a weekend, and met up with them several times over that summer. They were the most beautiful, warm, thoughtful couple. I was lucky to meet up with them both again during one of their several trips to Ireland. My thoughts and wishes are with all of the family. Gillian Ormond (Melbourne), daughter of Marian Ormond (nee O´Leary).
