James "Jim" Leroy Sapp, a man who could light up a room with his infectious smile and warm presence, has saddled up and ridden off into the eternal sunset on May 27, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, generosity, and a whole lot of horse sense. Born on May 9, 1932, in
Quinter, Kansas, Jim's journey through life was as spirited and adventurous as a wild mustang on the open plains.
Jim's life was a rich tapestry woven with love and laughter, shared with his beloved wife of nearly 43 years, Karen, and their blended herd of children: James R., Cathy, Deena, Terry, Mary, Julia, and Monica, not to mention the abundant flock of grandchildren, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids who kept him young at heart. His four sisters, Evelyn, Irene, Carol, and Kay, also survive him, each of them a testament to the strong family ties that were central to Jim's life.
Before settling down, Jim's work history was as varied as his interests. He cut his teeth in the lumber industry, witnessed the dawn of the atomic age with AEC in Nevada, and could sell a Chevy with such charm that you'd drive away wondering how you ever lived without one. In 1984, Jim and Karen ignited their entrepreneurial spirit and founded Albany Stoves Inc., warming the hearths of their community until they hung up their hats in retirement in 2009.
But let's talk about what really made Jim's world go round-horses. From the rodeo days of his youth to the countless hours spent breaking, raising, and training horses, Jim's passion for these majestic creatures was the stuff of legend. He was the cowboy who could teach a 4H kid how to ride like the wind and care for their four-legged companion with tenderness and respect. As a proud member of the Linn County Posse, he not only kept the peace but also ensured that the spirit of the West remained alive and kicking.
Jim was a man of faith, too; a Gideon through and through. He spread the Good Book far and wide, handing out Bibles with the same enthusiasm he had for sharing his beloved "Jim-isms." Oh, those Jim-isms! Like a stand-up comedian with a heart of gold, Jim had a quip for every occasion, a joke for every moment of silence, and a story that could make the sourest puss burst into giggles.
To say Jim was funny is an understatement. He was the embodiment of wit, with a friendliness that drew people in and a generosity that knew no bounds. Whether he was lending a hand, a dollar, or an ear, Jim was the go-to guy for a dose of cheer and a helping hand.
Jim's departure from this world is akin to the last cowboy song fading over the horizon, leaving behind echoes of laughter and a trail of memories that will forever be cherished by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. His smile, his jokes, his stories, and all of his Jim-isms will be dearly missed.
Preceded in death by his parents Harley and Sybil Sapp, brother Gene Sapp, son Steven (Bert) Sapp and two grandkids Bambi and Nick.
