James "Mike" Michael Shive, age 67, of Holiday Shores, IL, a kind-hearted, intelligent, and just man, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. His life was a testament to compassion, curiosity, and joy, leaving an enduring mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mike was born on November 13, 1957, in Alton, IL, the son of the late James Edward & Carolyn (Braddy) Shive. Mike married Linda G. (Roy) Shive on October 12, 1991, in Granite City, IL. Besides his wife of 33 years, Mike is survived by his three sons, Kyle Shive (as well as his wife Amanda Shive), Lucas Shive, Sean Shive (also his wife Julia Shive), all of Holiday Shores, IL; and his three grandchildren, Oliver Shive, Eliott Shive, Callahan Shive, all of Holiday Shores, IL. Besides his parents, Mike was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Shive; and a brother, Tim Shive.
A devoted family man, Mike's most cherished times were those spent with his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and beloved wife of over 33 years. He was happiest sharing conversations, playing basketball and catch, and sitting in his recliner talking about the world. He found great joy in yard games, nostalgic board games like Skittle Bowl, going on walks, and laughing with his family while watching TV shows like That 70's Show and Trailer Park Boys.
Mike loved living in Holiday Shores, the community he chose to raise his family. His home was his sanctuary, where he took pride in watching his sons and their friends play football and catch in the yard. He especially cherished evenings in the backyard with his wife, watching the ever-changing sunsets that painted the sky with beauty and peace.
He held a deep connection to the mountains of Colorado, the serene landscapes of Oregon and the West Coast, and the majestic redwoods. He loved loading his family in the van to go on road trips-hiking on trails, swimming at night, and watching Kung Fu starring David Carradine. A Buddhist practitioner and meditator, Mike often engaged in thoughtful discussions about truth-seeking and the meaning of life.
His passions included music from his youth, weightlifting, nutrition, and philosophy. He was a vegetarian who lived with intentionality and care for the world around him. He enjoyed singing, dancing, and attending concerts with his wife. He loved car shows, craft fairs in the park, and going on long walks through the neighborhood chatting with neighbors. A devoted dog enthusiast, he especially loved German Shepherds. His laughter often filled the room as he enjoyed comedians like George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg, and random funny videos he found online.
A man of giving spirit, Mike supported the Mid America Buddhist Association, contributed generously to Native American communities in South Dakota, and was a regular at the Leisure World Health Club. He rehabbed rundown homes, making them safe and clean for families. He had many old and dear friends, whom he spoke of fondly.
He was a strong fighter against the horrible disease that took his life, ALS. He was part of a case study for a year, where he donated time and his tissue to help fight for a cure.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his warmth, humor, and passion for life. His legacy of love, laughter, and boundless curiosity will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held for Mike in Spring 2025 at the Holiday Shores Club House. Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com. If you want to help in any way there will be a walk in St. Louis for the annual Walk to Defeat ALS.
