James Hilding Shoberg, loving husband, father, brother, son, and friend, age 81 of Verona, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025. He was predeceased by his best friend and devoted wife of 50 years, Donna Lee Shoberg. He is survived by his two children, Dawn Lynn Shoberg and James Michael Shoberg; his grandchildren, Morgan Lynn Pratillo, Holly Anne Pratillo, and Hunter Michael Tavella; his daughter-in-law, Carrie Lee Shoberg; and his brothers, Robert Martin Shoberg and Richard Hilton Shoberg (James' twin)-among others in his extended family.

James was an extremely proud veteran of the Marine Corps for whom he did volunteer work through the Forbes Trail Detachment. His face was known everywhere in his home areas of Penn Hills and Verona, as he was always on the move, unable to stay in one place for too long. James was infamous for being a "lovable, cantankerous crank", who enjoyed bargains, discounts, "freebies", scavenging, playing the daily lottery, and complaining. He was the sort of man who kept you guessing when it came to what he was going to say next.

Most of all, he was generous to a fault with his time, attention, and resources, and never turned away from someone in need-be they family, friend, or stranger. His actions always spoke louder than his gruff words. He never wanted the world to mistake him for a "nice man", even though his deeds clearly demonstrated that he was a truly good one.

At ease, soldier. OORAH!

Per James' wishes, there will be no public viewing or service. A small, private gathering will be held for family and close friends to celebrate his life.
