James Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Click Funeral Home - Lenoir City on Jan. 3, 2026.
James Edward "Ed" Smith
February 2, 1942 – January 2, 2026
Passed away at his home at 8:00 pm January 2, 2026, from complications of pneumonia and lung cancer.
Ed was a graduate of Farragut High School, class of 1960, and the Avery Masonic Lodge #593 F&AM. He was a Christian and a member of Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He retired from Knoxville City Schools where in addition to teaching, he was a basketball and baseball coach at West Haven Elementary and Northwest Middle School.
If the topic was sports, Ed was in his element. He excelled at everything he tried, lettering in all three sports at Farragut High School and later playing basketball at Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tennessee. His greatest passion, however, was golf. As a longtime member of the Willow Creek Golf Association, he cherished the camaraderie and friendships of many lifelong buddies. A proud Vol for Life, Ed also enthusiastically followed the Atlanta Braves.
Preceded in death by parents Clifford J. "Jack" Smith and Virginia Everett Smith, and sister Marjie Smith Isbell.
Survived by wife of 62 years, Mona Isbell Smith, son, Daryl Allen (Rachel), sister, Sandra Smith (Rick) Hill, granddaughter, Savannah Beth Smith, brother-in-law, Bob Isbell, life-long friends, Harold and Rebecca McReynolds, and several nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for the excellent care he received from Tennessee Cancer Specialists with Dr. Mitchell Martin, Candice Blair, and special nurse Taylor; Dr. Nilesh Patel, radiologist, and his loving staff.
Receiving of friends will be on Tuesday, January 6th from 5-7 p.m. at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. Family and friends will gather at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7th at Concord Masonic Cemetery with Masonic services conferred by Avery Masonic Lodge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
