James Anthony Stanley, 75, slipped away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 27, 2025 surrounded by his family after an extended illness. The son of Vieva (Hunt) Irwin and Marvin E. Stanley was born and raised in Summitville, IN. Jim grew up with his siblings terrorizing our small sleepy town.
Jim was a truck driver for many years, as well as working in the construction industry. Jim's brother began his own construction company, Stanley Brothers Masonry. Jim started working with his brothers full time and was no longer on the road. Jim and his brothers worked tirelessly side by side building a name for themselves and became some of the best brick layers in the state.
Jim loved motorcycles and could be found on any given evening, with a daughter or grandkid on the back living his very best life. Family is the core of the infamous Stanley name. Where you see one, there will normally be five more. Jim absolutely embraced family, making sure everyone knew how much they were loved. It didn't matter if you were one of his kids, a niece or nephew, or even someone's friend. There was also the flip side of that, the temper...One thing you didn't want to do is get Jim mad, because the world you were currently in, was going to change in a big way. He blessed all of us children with the very same temper and attitude, we are so thankful. There is a hint of sarcasm there, but in reality, he taught us that you never back down if you believed in what you were fighting for, and your family is the greatest gift given to you and it should be cherished.
As you all walk through Summitville over the next few weeks just look around at all the people you encounter. If there is a red head around....its probably a Stanley kid.
Jim leaves behind his wife of forty-seven years, Phyllis (Greiner) Stanley; sisters Denise Lane-Denton and Judy Martin; half brother Michael Stanley; half sisters Misty Dawn Smith, Patti Swetnam, and Lori Stanley; Sons Victor Graves (Carrie), Danny Graves (Christy), James Stocks, James Stanley Jr. (Trish), Scott Stanley (Jennifer); daughter Rachelle Devine (Randy) and son-in-law Adam Scoda; grandchildren Nikki, Amanda (Zach), Shae, Brandon, Jared, Amira, Dewayne, Megan, Makayla (Josh), Trent (Shelbie), Taylor, Kyra, Chelsey (Tyler), Conner, Chayse, Kenleigh (John) Kai, Roxanna, Miranda, Kane and many great-grandchildren. There are also many nieces and nephews that Jim thought the world of, and loved them as if they were his own. (You know who you are).
Jim joins his parents Vieva Irwin, Marvin Stanley, and step-father Walter Irwin; brothers Bruce, Phillip, Paul, and Jon; sisters, Dixie Ryan and Mary Beth Inglis and beloved daughter Randi (Stanley) Scoda.
Graveside services will be held for Jim on August 9, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Vinson Cemetery located in Summitville, IN. We will then reconvene to the farm to celebrate Jim's life with a grand finale beginning at 5:00 PM. Bring a dish to share and your own booze! We look forward to seeing everyone.
