James Brian "Jim" Sweeney of Reston, VA, formerly of Arlington, MA passed away on February 26, 2025. Jim is survived by his children, Kelly-Ann Bahiraei and her husband Anoosh of Nashville, TN, Daniel Sweeney and his wife Natalia of Concord, MA, Matthew Sweeney and his wife Katie Bullen of Merrimac, MA, and Steven Sweeney of Lawrence, MA, as well as his former wife and their mother, Patricia Edmunds of Venice, FL. Jim is also survived by his companion, Lori Dileo of Clifton, VA. Jim was an uncle to thirteen nieces and nephews, and an extremely proud grandfather to six with a seventh grandchild expected this summer.
Jim was born on June 29th, 1956 in Medford, MA to the late Joyce and George Sweeney. He grew up in Arlington, MA with his siblings, Michael Sweeney, Sharon Valerio, Brian Sweeney, Richard Sweeney, and Robert Sweeney. He attended Arlington Public Schools where he was a loyal Spy Ponder, and graduated from Framingham State College in 1979.
Jim spent his professional career as a defense contractor in the Boston, MA and Washington, DC areas. He loved the outdoors in Lake Winnipesaukee, NH and was an avid fan of all Boston area professional sports teams. Jim had a quick-witted New England-style sense of humor, and was a skilled grillmaster at every home cookout. He particularly enjoyed saving recipes to share with his family. He delighted in holding his grandchildren during their babyhoods for a good couch nap. Jim was so lovingly proud of all of his children, and enjoyed sharing updates about their personal and professional successes with his friends and family.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 10th from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the DeVito Funeral Home in Arlington, MA. A funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday, March 11th at 10:00 am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington, MA.
