James Michael Szymanski, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on January 30, 2025, in Warren, Michigan, at the age of 77. Born on February 1, 1947, in Alpena, Michigan to the late Clarence and June (Gorski) Szymanski. Jim was a distinguished member of his community and a passionate professional.

Jim’s educational journey began at Alpena Catholic Central High School, where he served as class president, demonstrating leadership early in his life. He later earned an accounting degree from Central Michigan University, which laid the foundation for a successful career as a Certified Public Accountant. Jim worked for many years with prestigious firms, including Arthur Andersen and Besser Company in Alpena. Eventually, he took his entrepreneurial spirit to new heights by opening his own accounting firm alongside his former wife Kristen.

In addition to being a dedicated professional, Jim was a proud veteran who served honorably in the United States Army as a parachutist. His accomplishments as a highly decorated Green Beret reflect not only his commitment to service but also his patriotism and pride in his military background.

Jim was deeply committed to his family, leaving behind his two children, Lisa (Steve) Stinson of Hickory, NC, and Jon Szymanski of Alpena, MI. He is also survived by Kristen McInerney and his stepdaughter, Catie (Joe) Mager, and his grandchildren: Ashley (Derek) Donovan, Jacob, Samantha, Roxana, and Joey. His legacy of love continues through these family ties, along with his sister, Jane Jones, brothers William and Robert (Pat) Szymanski, sister-in-law, Cindy Szymanski, several nieces and nephews, and the mother of his children, Dorothy.

In reflecting on his personality, those who knew him would describe Jim as a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He embraced life with enthusiasm and was a devoted supporter of University of Michigan sports, proudly cheering for his team through the ups and downs.

Jim was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas and Daniel Szymanski, and his nieces, Jennifer Jones and Kari Schellie. His departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
