James B. Thomas, Jr., known affectionately as Jim, Dad, Bubba and Poppa, to his friends and family, departed this world on February 22, 2026, at the venerable age of 90.
Born on March 16, 1935, he grew up with his parents, JB and Stella, and three younger sisters, Donna, Judy and Martha in
Aucilla, Florida. Jim's journey through life was marked by an unwavering dedication to his family, a storied career in public service, and a zest for life that inspired all who knew him. Jim's life was a testament to the power of love and commitment. He was a family man through and through, and nothing delighted him more than the time spent with his children, Trey, Mary, and Chris, and the laughter-filled moments with his beloved seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. His sister, Donna Smith, was also a cherished companion, with whom he enjoyed regular dinners, sharing a bond that only siblings know.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and his devoted wife of 63 years, Sharon Kelly, his guiding star and travel companion on life's grand adventure.
A graduate of Jefferson County High 1952 and Florida State University in 1957, Jim's professional life was a chronicle of integrity and excellence. His career began as an auditor analyst in Florida before he set his sights on the nation's capital. Jim's expertise and ethical compass led him to serve as the Inspector General for the US Department of Education, a role he was honored to hold through four U.S. Presidencies. His final professional chapter saw him as the Director of Auditing at the Office of Chief Inspector General in Florida, a fitting culmination to a life dedicated to public service.
Jim's influence extended far beyond his professional achievements. He was a man of faith, who lived by the principles he held dear. His analytical mind was matched by a courageous heart, leading him to be a pillar of strength and wisdom for those around him. His establishment and involvement with several professional societies and membership in Killearn Kiwanis club underscored his commitment to giving back and making a positive impact on the world.
An adventurer at heart, Jim and his wife Sharon traversed the country, from casino to casino, through the majestic National Parks, and enjoyed the company of friends old and new. Cruising was also among his cherished pastimes, a reflection of his love for the open sea and the joy of discovery. Jim lived by the belief that "The only way to do great work is to love what you do." This philosophy resonated in every facet of his life, from his professional pursuits to the time spent with his extensive family.
Jim's legacy is one of love, courage, and an analytical mind that sought to understand the world and leave it better than he found it. Today, we celebrate the life of James B. Thomas, Jr., a man who embraced every moment with passion and purpose. His story encourages us all to pursue our passions, cherish our loved ones, and contribute to our communities with generosity and grace. Jim's memory will continue to serve as a beacon of inspiration, guiding us toward a life well-lived and a legacy that endures.
