Mr. Whitlow was born February 19, 1937, at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He graduated from Sylvan Hills High School in 1955, served in the US Army from 1959 - 1961, and then graduated from Mercer University in Macon, GA in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. After college, he began a 39-year career in the insurance business, retiring to Murrells Inlet, SC in 2001.
He rose to the rank of Sgt. in the US Army, spending most of his time in various positions concerning missile defense. An avid golfer in retirement, Mr. Whitlow was especially pleased over the years by visits from his grandchildren.
Mr. Whitlow was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Evelyn James and his father, William Hoyt Whitlow. Survivors include his wife, Patti Mayes of Murrells Inlet, SC, five children: Petra W. Remson (Paul) of Potomac, MD, Michel Coleman (David) of Alabaster, AL, James H. Whitlow, Jr, of Atlanta, GA, Gregory W. Whitlow of Atlanta, GA and Ashleigh B. Pettit of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Matthew J. Remson, Alex D. Coleman, Olivia M. Coleman, Elaina L. Coleman, Parker G. Whitlow, Chase J. Whitlow, Blake S. Whitlow, Julia P. Whitlow and Jackson A. Misbach.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, 4182 Hwy. 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 2:00 PM. Reception to follow at Inlet Affairs, 4024 Hwy 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
Flowers should be delivered to Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558 Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, SC, 29576. Memorial donations may also be made to MSA Hospice, 4685 Hwy 17 S. Business, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

Patti, my heart breaks for you. You and Jim were such wonderful friends to my Mom and Dad. You will forever be a part of our family. Jimmy was so kind to my brother Richard. On behalf of our family, we send our heartfelt condolences and prayers.
