Weathersfield, VT.
Jim passed away peacefully in the home he loved and had shared with his beloved wife, surrounded by family. His final days were filled with love and laughter, as many came by to share stories and reminisce, but above all they wanted him to know how thankful they were to call him a friend.
James Charles Wimberg was born on March 11, 1946, to Chester and Elaine Wimberg in Ocean City, NJ. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ginger, his brother Tom, who was his "partner in crime," and his siter Susan. Jim Wimberg made lifelong friends wherever he went from his attendance at St. Augustine's Catholic School to Ocean City High School to Bordentown Military Academy to Kingsport Military Academy. He served in the Navy in 1968 and his extraordinary life truly began when he met and married the love of his life, Virginia Jane Lovette, on December 28, 1967. At that point, Jim and Ginger moved into a house on Euclid Avenue in Beesley's Point in the same neighborhood as Jim's brother, Tom and his wife Murial (Ginger's sister). Jim and Ginger made many lifelong friends in this neighborhood, considering many of these neighbors as family. Jim and Ginger started a family beginning in 1968 with the birth of their eldest son Chet, their second son Christian arrived in 1970 and their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1977.
After returning home from a wedding he and Ginger attended in Vermont, Jim, who was never one to shy away from doing what he thought best, returned to Vermont in 1980, bought a house and land and went home and told the family they were moving. Jim and Ginger made a wonderful life in Vermont. Jim worked at Stacey Lumbar Yard in Windsor, VT, until he started his career at USPS in White River Jct., VT. He started working on the docks throwing mail bags and worked his way up to manager of transportation upon his retirement. Throughout the years, Jim worked many parttime jobs, as well, to support his family.
Although Jim worked many hours, he also managed to find time to attend his children's games and school functions, help his neighbors, make and connect with lifelong friends, volunteer in the Weathersfield community and stay in close touch with his family in New Jersey. When the family first moved into their house in Ascutney, Vermont, they raised farm animals and planted and cared for a huge garden. After winning a house in a 1994 radio station contest, the family moved to a beautiful new home in Weathersfield, where the work began again creating new gardens and making this new house a home. Creating this home atmosphere involved welcoming many friends, as if they were family, to stay for dinners as well as to stay when they needed a temporary place to live.
Making memories by going on adventures and traveling with family and friends became part of Jim and Ginger's rich life. Jim loved traveling to Switzerland as well as going on cruises. In addition, camping, canoeing and kayaking became a regular friend event for many years. He was part of the group of friends who called themselves the "Rubber Ducky Club." On the occasion of a club gathering, he would post a big ducky sign at the end of his driveway. Gatherings at Jim and Ginger's house to celebrate birthdays and holidays was always special and involved many story retellings and lots of laughter.
As an overgrown kid himself, he played a huge role in his friends' children's lives as well as in his grandchildren's lives. He was known for providing "forbidden snacks" to children under his watchful eye as well as being known and loved for being "Crazy Pop" to his grandchildren. At the end of the day, he was known to have said "all that matters is family" but, throughout his life, his use of the word family encompassed many more individuals than those directly related to him.
Besides his many friends, Jim leaves behind his children: Chester Wimberg and his wife Lynn Coppell (Texas), Christian Wimberg (Ascutney, VT), Elizabeth Dimick and husband Kenneth (Ascutney, VT); his grandchildren: Emma Wimberg, Erika Anderson and husband Guy Crescenzo James Wimberg and fiancé Taina Perez, Teah Vazquez and Beau Dimick; and his great-grandchildren: Drew Flick and Lilah Wimberg
