Brevard - Jane Mikell Chester, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Born on February 12, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida, she wasted no time making her mark on the world-starting with capturing the heart of her high school sweetheart, Jim. They married in 1959, beginning a lifelong adventure filled with music, love, and just the right amount of chaos.
She was predeceased by her parents, Henry Allen and Mary Jane Mikell and her brother, Gene Allen Mikell.
A church pianist from an early age, Jane never stopped making music-whether from the sanctuary piano or in her own living room, surrounded by family singing hymns or by children she taught in Brevard, North Carolina. Teaching piano wasn't just a job; it was a calling. Many church pianists owe their beginnings to her instruction and encouragement.
Never one to do just one thing at a time, Jane also opened and operated a music store, ran a successful real estate firm, and later opened a cozy coffee shop, where regulars came for the caffeine but stayed for the conversation. If there was an opportunity to build community, she jumped in with both feet-usually wearing fabulous shoes.
Her home was a revolving door of love and welcome. Over the years, she and Jim fostered children-and occasionally young adults-who simply needed a place to land. No one was ever a stranger for long. She offered grace, a hot meal, a delicious dessert, and a good cup of coffee.
Jane lived a full and giving life. At just 17, she left Jacksonville as a newlywed Air Force wife, eventually settling in Brevard in 1969.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years and best friend, James Chester; and her three daughters and sons-in-law: Martin and Patti Reidinger, Mike and Cheri Snipes, and Frank and Julie Moody. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry on her legacy of love, faith, and music.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
