In Loving Memory of Roberto Lozano Jr. 8/26/1929 - 7/09/2025
Roberto Lozano Jr. passed away peacefully on July 9th, 2025 at 95 years of age. He was much loved and will be remembered by many. He was born on August 26, 1929 in San Antonio, Texas where he grew up one of 5 children of Roberto Lozano Sr. and Sophia Pena Lozano. Bertha Aretaga Lozano, his wife of 69 years, preceded him in death in April of 2023. As a young boy he had a natural artistic talent, and at an early age knew how to sculpt accurately the human anatomy. It was 1947 at the FirstMexican Presbyterian Church, which was on Durango Street.
Roberto introduced himself to Bertha by way of a spray of water produced by a water pistol he pulled from his jacket during a church service. He captured her attention and then her heart. He attended Fox Vocational & Technical High School, San Antonio Texas where he honed his natural artist talent, was a Fox Cheerleader and received Military Training in the rank of Cadet Captain in 1947.
He served in the Air National Guard of Texas and The United States in Korea as S/Sargent of the 236th Air Service Corp until June of 1952. He painted the pilots names and nose art on the fighter planes. Roberto and Bertha married upon his return from Korea.
He worked as Civil Servant at The Brooke Army Medical Center BAMC as the director of Medical Graphic, Academy of Health Sciences, United States Army as Illustrator, and in the Training Aids Division of the Medical Field Service School from 1951 to 1982. Every year he would create, design and build the Brooke Army Medical Center floats for San Antonio Battle of Flowers and Fiesta Flambeau parades for Fiesta San Antonio.
He was the oldest founding member of The River Art Group of San Antonio from 1948 had continued to paint and exhibit in the gallery at La Vita up until his passing. He is most especially loved and remembered by his three children Roberto III, Cassandra and Lisa Lozano and by her granddaughters Elizabeth Gambino Rojo and Lily Sofia Lozano, Carmen Rojo, wife of Roberto III, and Mason Rader, husband to Cassandra and numerous nieces and nephews of the Arteaga and Lozano families will miss also him greatly.
