Mary Jane Hannah Smith passed away peacefully Saturday, March 29, 2025 at
Hospice of West Alabama. She was born on June 16, 1950 to the late Ruth and
Lester Hannah of Gordo, AL. She is survived by Freddie Smith, her loving husband of
54 years, her son Jeramy and daughter, Amy. She is also survived by her siblings,
Gail Shirley, John (Brenda) Hannah, and David (Summer) Hannah. Her brother, Mack
Mosley and sister, Judy Odell preceded her in death. Jane also has a number of
nieces and nephews. She sacrificially and generously loved and served her family her
entire life.
Jane graduated from Gordo High School and The University of Alabama. She loved all
things Crimson Tide and Atlanta Braves. She taught English and literature in Pickens
County, Bevill State Community College, The University of Alabama and Columbus
Municipal School District for 47 years. Her students were one of her greatest
treasures. She believed in the potential of all of her students and continued
relationships with many of them long after their time in her classroom. She was a
longtime member of Cornerstone Church in Gordo, AL and taught the men's Sunday
school class and the Wesley Sunday school class.
Jane will be honored at a memorial on Friday, April 4 at Cornerstone Church in Gordo,
AL at 11:00AM with visitors being received at 10:00AM. Reverend Marvin McCormick
will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of West Alabama
