Janet Lorane Henderson, 87, Hancock, MD., passed away May 26, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, MD.
Born in Fulton County, PA., she was the daughter of the late Lena Truax and Guy Yonker. She married David Henderson, and as that chapter of her life closed, she met her partner, Gerald Shaw, whom she shared her life with for over 30 years, until his passing in 2003. The last seven years of her life she spent with her companion, Walter (Bud) Dyer, Jr.
She attended Hancock schools, but the last two years of her education were spent at Southern Fulton High School, where she graduated in 1956.
She was employed at GC Murphy’s in Hancock until moving onto the A&P store, where she worked for over 20 years. She retired from Super Fresh and then became a retired business owner.
She was a member of Hancock United Methodist Church.
She was an avid bowler and enjoyed going to sewing each week at Helen’s with Lucille’s Feedsack Quilt Club.
She loved traveling with friends and family all over the country. She enjoyed going to Daytona races with Gerald, going to the beach with Pam and the boys, an Alaskan cruise with Dianna, Lenny and Katie. She traveled to Florida, Mexico, Europe, and beyond.
Dining out with friends and family was something she always looked forward to. You could always find her on her porch in the evenings watching as the traffic went by, waving with a big, beautiful smile to everyone she saw.
She will be remembered for her kind heart, infectious smile, and sweet, loving personality. She lit up every room she walked into and never met a stranger.
She is survived by her brother, Willis (Bill) Yonker, (Phyllis); a sister, Hazel Mellott, (George); a step-sister Melva Moore; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy & Lena; her step-mother, Cleo Yonker; two brothers, Donald Edward Yonker, and Richard Linwood Yonker; and a sister, Gloria Dean Unger.
The family will receive friends, Sunday, June 2, 2024, 1-3 pm, at Hancock United Methodist Church, 170 West Main St., Hancock, MD. Funeral services will follow at the church at 3:00 pm. Pastor Becki Wessinger will officiate. Burial will be at Rehobeth Church, 2328 Tollgate Ridge, Mercersburg PA.
