Janet Christine Allemeier Strawbridge, 74 of Carmel, peacefully passed away Saturday, April 12, 2025, surrounded by her family. Jan was born November 10, 1950, to the late Roy and Dorothy Allemeier in Toledo, Ohio. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Indiana University, where Jan was a member of Chi Omega sorority. At IU, she met the love of her life, Steve, and formed countless friendships that she cherished for decades.
Jan taught first grade at John Strange Elementary School in Washington Township. She taught kindergarten at Christ the King School after she raised her children and also taught pre-school for several years. She was a member of the Junior League of Indianapolis and the Children’s Museum Guild.
During her cherished 'Gigi' years, Jan became a beloved presence in her community and a dedicated volunteer at her grandchildren’s schools, ultimately earning the title of Living Legend—a distinction she wore with pride. She also co-founded the famously unofficial '1-800-Just Call Jan and Kathy,' which specialized in instantaneously answering questions no matter how complex. Renowned for her impeccable gift-giving, unmatched shopping enthusiasm, and signature style, her passing was felt not only by her loved ones, but perhaps even by the stock prices of Target and Amazon.
Family and friends are invited to gather Thursday, April 24 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Flanner Buchanan-Carmel. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 25 at 11:00 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church, where an additional visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the Mass.
A reception will be held from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Chatham Hills Country Club (1100 Chatham Hills Blvd., Westfield, IN 46074) following services to continue the celebration of Jan's life.
Jan is survived by her husband of 53 years, Steven; children, Amy (Jeremy) Kinnett, Laura (Darren) Hamm, Bryan (Katie) Strawbridge; grandchildren, Carter, Sawyer and Foster Kinnett, Luke and Emily Hamm, James and Piper Strawbridge; siblings, David (Joan) Allemeier, Karen Kennedy (Chris Myers), Mary Ann (Ken) Foote. Jan was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Allemeier.
