Jay Stewart

Jay Stewart passed away on August 13th in Rockingham, North Carolina. Born in Laurinburg, NC on November 12, 1958, to Kemp Baker Stewart and Elsie Hatt Stewart, his earlier years were spent in Stafford Springs, Connecticut where he was known for his vibrant spirit. An intense and dedicated football player in his younger years, he carried that passion and intensity into all aspects of his life. In Connecticut he attended Windham Technical High School where he developed his mechanical skills plus electrical and refrigeration knowledge. He was a graduate of Scotland High School in 1977.

A true enthusiast of NASCAR racing, Jay found exhilaration in the speed and competition of the sport, a passion he shared with many. He was also a skilled and diligent construction worker, contributing to the development of his community through his craft.

Jay worked for Elektran Electrical Services in Rockingham and retired from Hornwood Inc., a manufacturer of athletic sportswear, fabrics for automobiles and textiles for the military.

He will be deeply missed by his family and cherished friends, both in Connecticut and North Carolina, who shared countless memories and adventures with him.

Jay was preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Hatt Stewart of Connecticut, and brother, Kemp B. Stewart, Jr. of Connecticut. Survivors include his father, Kemp B. Stewart of Laurinburg, his twin sister, Joy Stewart Russo (Sal) of New York, brothers, Kane Alexander Stewart of Massachusetts, Gene Lyndon Stewart (Linda) of Maxton, his stepmother, Sylvia Grubbs Stewart of Laurinburg and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his loyal "Rooster sidekick" Chihuahua who brought immense joy to his life.

A service of remembrance will be held at the Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham on Thursday, August 21st, 2025, at 11:00 am. Prior to the service, visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 10:50 am.
