JC Hicks Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Day & Genda Funeral Home - Bodine Chapel on Mar. 11, 2024.

When an early February cancer diagnosis offered little chance of improvement, in his true fashion, JC Hicks finished up all his business, took one last trip to see his brother and family, and decided it was time for him to get on home on March 10, 2024.

JC was born on September 19, 1942, in Winston County, Alabama, to James and Irene (Dyer) Hicks. JC attended Double Springs Elementary School before he moved to Lafayette, Indiana, and attended Tecumseh Middle School while living with his brother and sister-in-law, Darl and Carol Hicks. With them, he was not just their kid brother - he became more like a son.

JC went on to join the Air Force in 1960. He served in England from 1961 to 1964 and specialized in aircraft hydraulics. After the service, he returned to Muncie, Indiana, where he worked at Westinghouse.

On December 17, 1965, at 10:30 pm after bowling league, JC married Teresa Schoeff of Muncie, and a year later, they welcomed their daughter, Carla. In 1974, the family moved to Mulberry, Indiana. JC and his brother, Darl, worked together to build many homes in Lafayette, West Lafayette, and the surrounding areas.

JC also worked in building maintenance for Bioanalytical Services in West Lafayette, and when SIA was built, he became a building maintenance associate there and a wastewater specialist. JC retired from SIA after 25 years and took with him many lifelong friendships. The only thing JC wasn’t very good at was retirement because he could never sit still. He was always making something, building something, or remodeling his own or someone else’s home. He tinkered to “fix” things (even when they weren’t broken) and caught bugs with his great-granddaughter. Most recently, he spent time visiting friends and family, playing cards with loved ones, and telling stories we will all cherish. JC was never shy in sharing his faith. In his final days, he let us know that he knew his days were few, but he took comfort in knowing Jesus. JC will be remembered by those who knew him for his well-timed jokes and fantastic sense of humor.

JC was reunited with his beloved wife, Teresa, and his daughter, Carla (Hicks) Suter, his parents, and brothers Waymon, Wendell, and Raymon Hicks, who all passed on before him.

JC’s legacy and memories will be celebrated and carried by his three granddaughters, Amie Mullikin (Kevin Bump), Amanda (Rob) Spradlin, and Amity (Tommy) Miller; two great-granddaughters, Maya Bashir and Aspen Miller; his brothers, Darl (Carol) Hicks, Jimmy (Sandy) Hicks and their families; sister, Cathy (Robert) Hudson and her family; and his companion, Sharron Alexander.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 17, 2024, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Day & Genda Funeral Home ~ Bodine Chapel in Rossville.  Funeral services will be Monday, March 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Brian White officiating.  Burial will follow in Fair Haven Cemetery.  Military rites will be performed by the Clinton County Honor Guard.   Memorial contributions in JC’s name can be made to the American Cancer Society or Huntington’s Disease Society of America.  Messages of condolence to the family are welcomed at www.dayandgenda.com.
