Jean Carvel Winegard Covington, 87, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, in Roanoke with her friends at her side.
She was born on October 24, 1937, in Tacoma Park, Maryland, as an only child to the late Vance Atherton and Louise Anna Crawford Winegard.
She grew up during a remarkable time in Washington, D.C., and throughout her life, she carried a deep love and enduring appreciation for the city of her birth.
In October 1961, she married Lawrence Merle Covington. The couple moved to Roanoke, Virginia, in 1977, where they discovered a welcoming community of fellow wine enthusiasts. Their shared passion for wine and caring for animals, especially dogs, brought them closer to their neighbors and to each other.
Jean had a passion for gardening, and she deeply cherished moments spent planting trees alongside her husband, creating lasting memories in their garden.
Jean was known for her spirit of adventure and had a deep enjoyment of traveling. She will be remembered by all as a kind and loving person.
Jean will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Larry and her cherished parents, Vance and Louise.
She is survived by her special friends, Pam and Lee Simmons, and Pam Kendall.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, July 14, 2025, at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Port Republic with Reverend Russell Heinrich officiating.
Henry Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
