CASTLETON- Jean Ruth Hughes Adams Henske, 88, of Castleton died Wednesday, April 16, 2025, in W. Rutland, VT.
She was born on September 9, 1936 in Fair Haven, the daughter of Leonard Hughes and Ruth (Sheldon) Hughes.
Jean grew up in Fair Haven, graduating from High School in 1954, as co-salutatorian. She loved playing basketball.
In 1953, Jean married Ai Adams, later married Gerald Adams until his untimely death, then married Albert Henske.
In addition to being a devoted mother, Jean had an entrepreneurial career, helping to manage the Adams farm, owner of Lake Hortonia Country Store, Lake Hortonia Properties, Vermont Heritage Real Estate. Additionally, she was an associate broker at her daughter's business, Westside Real Estate and was a landlord at her Castleton property.
Jean was a member of the Center Grange #290 for 60+ years, Hubbardton Congregational Church and Historical Society.
Survivors are daughters, Melissa Loughan (Pat deceased) of W. Rutland, Beverly Ellis (Ray) of Fair Haven and Rebecca Jones (Mary Ann Zielonko, deceased) of Rutland Town and a son, Ronald Adams (Julie) of Fair Haven, grandchildren Hope Rogers of Manchester, Jason Ellis of Fair Haven, Stephanie Wood of Peabody, Mass, Jared Ellis of Fair Haven, Patrick Loughan, Jr of Fair Haven, Christopher Adams of Fair Haven, Jesse Jones of Fair Haven, Melissa Jones of W. Rutland, many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Timothy Adams, a daughter, Jerri Adams, grandchildren, Jeffrey Adams and Lynn Adams. Jean also has sister-in-laws, Anita Hughes and Rita Hughes, both of Fair Haven and was also predeceased by her brothers, Jack Hughes and Larry Hughes, sisters, Linda Rooker and Judith Aungst. Jean also had step-children, Susan Lamarche, Thomas Henske, Stephen Henske, Christopher Henske, Mary Ellen Bruderman, John Henske and Regina Henske. Jean loved her black lab, Sam and her cat, Midnight.
A Funeral Service will be held at noon on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the Hubbardton Congregational Church with Grange honors, burial at Hubbardton Cemetery and will follow with a lunch gathering at the Hubbardton Center Grange.
The family wants to express gratitude to Jean's doctors, VNA Hospice nurses, aids and volunteers, who provided exceptional care. Arrangements are with the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Grange #290, Monument Hill Road, Hubbardton, VT 05735.
