Jean Olsen Hill

Our dear, sweet, beautiful Mom, and Grandma Jean passed away on March 11, 2025. She was an incredible example of resilience and perseverance–of rallying after setbacks and carrying on.

Jean was born in Brigham City, Utah on December 23, 1942, to Victor Rudolph and Fern Gorringe Olsen. She spent her childhood and young adult years in Ogden, Utah, enjoying her neighborhood and friends. Jean graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1961 and after graduation attended beauty school. Although cosmetology was never her profession, Jean used those skills to serve her family and others well through the years.

Like a classic 1950s romance, Jean met her future husband, Raymond Douglas Hill, at Lorin Farr Park in Ogden when they were both young teenagers. They were smitten and dated through their high school years. Ray was Jean’s one and only love. They were married in 1962 and later sealed in 1971. After starting their married life in Ogden, Jean and Ray moved their family to Eden in Ogden Valley where they established a home to nurture and raise their three children, Kevin, Jodi, and Keith. When Ray, also known as “Papa Ray,” passed away unexpectedly in 1996, Jean was suddenly left alone to navigate a new life, which she did with grace and resolve. Despite this hardship, she continued to serve those around her and kept her family close.

Jean cherished her roles of “Mom” and “Grandma,” and, in turn, her children and grandchildren cherish her. Whenever her children had good news to share–especially about new additions to the family–there was no one more animated or excited than Jean. With the birth of each new grandchild, she became affectionately known to them and others as “Grandma Jean.” If it was for her grandchildren, nothing was beyond her. She loved visiting Disneyland, traveling to the Oregon Coast, going on cruises, making crafts and even playing video games with her grandchildren. The Christmases that Grandma Jean put on for her family and grandchildren will be remembered as epic!

Outside of the home, Jean served on the McKay Dee Hospital Women’s Council that provided design input for the construction of the hospital in the early 2000s. She traveled to various schools with the Friends for Sight Organization to test children’s eyesight. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and found the most joy in teaching and serving the little ones.

After living almost 50 years with wonderful family, friends, and neighbors in Eden, Jean transitioned to The Lodge in North Ogden in 2019 where she was one of the first residents. The family would like to thank all those friends and professionals that made The Lodge feel like home and family to her.

Jean is survived by three children, Kevin Hill, Jodi Hill (Brandon) Baxter, and Keith (Wendee) Hill; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents; and her brothers, Wayne and Ted Olsen.

Funeral services in Jean’s honor will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Eden 1st Ward Chapel, 6500 East 1900 North. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment at Mountain View Cemetery in Eden. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
