Jean Snowden Johnson passed away peacefully at the age of 99 1/2 years in the home of her daughter, Beverly, in
Huntsville, AL on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, which was the birthday of her late husband of almost 70 years. She was born in Castleberry, AL on March 29, 1926, to William Samuel, Sr. and Jessie Bell Snowden. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William Samuel Snowden, Jr.; sister, June Snowden Scott; brother, Robert Frank Snowden; and son-in-law, James Michael Scherer, Sr.
After graduating from Evergreen High School in 1944 and beginning her higher education at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, Jean wed her high school sweetheart, Edsel Johnson, on February 4, 1945. They first resided in Brewton, AL where they raised their five children. While living in Brewton, Jean was a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and Brewton Civic League member. The family moved to Eufaula, AL in the early 60s where Jean briefly worked at the Eufaula Tribune and also taught in the Head Start Program. After raising her children, she continued her higher education at Troy State University in Dothan and taught many children in the Eufaula City School System and later in the Conecuh County School System, after returning to her hometown of Evergreen, AL in the early 80s.
She loved God's beautiful world and all people; this was evidenced by ever blooming flowers, hummingbird feeders, pets, and always welcomed house guests. Jean's love of music and her church led to her serving others as she volunteered as a music teacher and church pianist and ministry in the office of priest in the Community of Christ Church. Her gracious Southern hospitality was enjoyed by friends and family, as the Johnson home was the gathering place for many school and family reunions, Christmas parties, and memorable celebrations. There was always freshly baked cakes, apple tarts, divinity, fudge, and hot biscuits.
She is remembered and celebrated by her family as a woman who never let her family down and who provided them with abundant love, happiness, humor, encouragement, and wisdom. Jean is survived by five children; Beverly Scherer and Sheila (John) Davidson, both of Huntsville, Edsel (Donna) Johnson Jr., Dothan, June (Jody) Powell, Franklin, TN, and Kathryn (Randy) Salter, Evergreen ; 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
