Jean Merryweather Obituary
Rhinebeck – Jean B. Merryweather, 81, a lifetime resident of Rhinebeck, passed away on May 28, 2024 at Northern Dutchess Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Rhinebeck on January 4, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Ann (Sullivan) Buckley.
Jean was a graduate from Rhinebeck High School. She went on to attend SUNY College of Oneonta and graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Education.
Upon graduation she started her most cherished chapter of her life, marrying her high school sweetheart, Thomas on June 27, 1964.
For several years, Jean was an elementary school teacher in the Red Hook and Rhinebeck School Districts. Once she started a family, she became a full-time stay-at-home mother. Jean's life was defined by being a devoted wife and mother to her three children. Being a stay-at-home mom was the greatest joy of her life. She never missed an event and was an active part of their school journeys. She loved volunteering at their school and being their school room mom. She also loved to create their Halloween costumes, make custom cakes for their birthdays and host the best holiday celebrations. The best way to sum up her role as a mother was that she was every child's dream mom. She was also every child's dream grandmother aka Mimi. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandson. She attended as many events as she could and loved to play board games with them. Their latest favorite game to play together was Clue.
In 1995, when her daughter left for college, Jean started an in-home daycare on Chestnut Street in Rhinebeck. For 22 years, she found fulfillment in caring for many local children, whom she considered family. She was affectionately known as the "Baby Whisperer."
In Jean's free time her favorite hobby was shopping. She along with her sister and forever friends enjoyed monthly shopping weekends that they called "Shop-a-thons." She loved shopping for anything from home items to clothes. But most of all she loved shopping for gifts for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing Mah Jong weekly for many years with a group of her closest friends. During her downtime at home she enjoyed reading. There was never a time she was not in the middle of a book. Jean had one of the best laughs and a great sense of humor. Her smart wit and comedic timing were unmatched. Laughing with family and friends gave her immense joy.
Jean touched so many lives. Her unwavering support, immense love, and daily phone calls were a constant. She was the definition of a pillar and matriarch of a family. To know her was to love her.
Jean was predeceased by her husband Thomas F. in 1986, as well as her two siblings, Daniel Buckley and Ann (Pat) Beaney and her sister-in-laws Sally Searles and Jill Johnson.
Jean's family was her entire world. She is survived by her three children Thomas Merryweather, Marc Merryweather (Kaleen), and Michele Moll (Brendan). Her five grandchildren, Jessica Merryweather (Austin), Hailey Merryweather, Myla Merryweather, Daniel Moll, and Sadie Moll. And her great-grandson, Atticus Moore. She is also survived by her sister-in-laws, Jan Gumienny, Jacqueline Lindbloom, and Cynthia Gallagher. And her brother-in-law, James Beaney along with many nieces and nephews. Jean is also survived by her forever friends, Brenda Williams and Diane Weckesser.
